Peter Will English 100 9/23/13 Cause Essay Why I’m Joining the Marine Corps Once this semester is over I will be leaving for Marine boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. There are many reasons of why this decision is made by myself and many other Americans across the nation. The Corps provides many valuable benefits and is a great experience for young men and women and can lead to many job opportunities in the future. Pride is a word generated as soon as you become an athlete or even put in effort to your school, work when you are young. In today’s society some American’s strive to do something that is bigger than them the Marine Corps assists in providing that. The pride of belonging to the Marines is something great and that can never be taken away from an individual who has been apart of this great fighting force. They say “Once a Marine, always a Marine” unlike a lot of other branches of military. When someone retires from the air force for example they usually just tell people “I was in the military.” Also in no way, shape, or form am I saying the Marines are above everyone else, it’s great to be in the service, and protect your country, that was just an example of what I have heard from past veterans. The Marines provide the toughest, most intense boot camp out of all of the different branches, the twelve and a half week transformation brings out a whole new warrior and ultimately a better person than what you were before. When you get out of boot camp you feel as if you are on top of the world is what past marines have told me. If a person is looking to make a change for the better I recommend you try to enlist in this service. The way Marines carry themselves is just incredible, they truly are the face of our country. I will be apart of the elite, the honorable, the few, the proud, the Marines! A typical college student spends thousands of dollars just to attend one semester of school, in the Marines that is not the case! While on active duty for the greatest fighting force in the world, you can take up to two college classes at a time, without paying anything out of your own pocket! Yes, they completely cover tuition and all of your books. In order to keep them paying for school you do have to maintain a C average or better, but this should not be too hard because of how few classes you will be taking. When your enlistment is finished, you can walk out of the Marines with either an associates, bachelors, and even sometimes a masters degree! I plan on taking one class at a time while I am a Marine. If you happen to get deployed while on duty, the professors cannot remove you from class or fail you, they usually just give you work to do and hand that in when you get back to campus. You also have plenty of time to do your schoolwork because on a normal day you are done with your job by four thirty post maritime. Upon finishing my enlistment I plan on becoming a State Trooper, this will not be a problem because I will have had military experience and more than enough college credits! The physical fitness level of being a Marine is probably for most Americans the hardest test of endurance, speed, and strength that they will have a chance to experience. Most Marines train many months before even going out to boot camp, for example just the other day my recruiter and myself ran about five miles and did an extreme amount of abdominal core exercises. Physical training may only be a small part of just over fifty percent of the United States population it is a huge deal to Marines. The way to ensure you are ready for combat is to make sure that you are in the greatest shape that you will ever be in your entire lifetime. If you’re a Marine and you are stranded out in the desert or the freezing mountains you will most likely survive and a portion of this is strongly influenced by the extreme level of physical training. You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror each night before falling asleep and ask yourself “Did I give it my all today'” If you truly are a Marine that should be an easy answer because nothing than your best effort is acceptable! The financial stability is always a question that many people have about members in the military. Starting out, you will make $30,000 a year, for a young kid that is a lot of money! The $30,000 a year is just extra cash in your pocket! What does that mean' It simply means that the Marines pay for your housing, food, and education. This allows service members to save a lot of money so that after they have served they will not necessarily “Need” a civilian job. As years go by that $30000 goes up as well and you still don’t have many payments! If you are married, have kids and choose to live on base, then housing is free! Medical and dental care is also covered 100%, not many businesses or corporations can honestly say that, but the Marines can! The Marines provide a healthy, fun, and a lot of love for families everywhere. If you need to make a change in your life join the Marines! Of course there are certain requirements, but in a nutshell if you can meet them or surpass them you will be a successful person. The benefits of being in the Marine Core are incredible and they could be discussed all day, there are really so many of them. If you want to live with a sense of pride, excellence, being fit, and financially stable become a Marine. In order to get to the top you must start at the bottom, at first the journey will not be easy but it will be worth it in then end!
