Case Study Number Four
The following case study will discuss management as a process and the core functions of managing, to include planning, leading, organizing and controlling. The purpose is to give a general overview of management and steps managers that are effective use on a daily basis..
Now let’s explore the core management functions. Planning is an important managerial function. It provides the map for defining the future state of the organization the project being manage and a map to accomplish the organization's objectives. In other words, planning is the process of thinking before doing. To solve the problems and take the advantages of the opportunities or deal with crisis situations created change, managers must develop formal long- and short-range plans so that organizations can move toward their objectives.
The next core function “Organizing” is getting prepared, getting organized. Management must organize all its resources well before in hand to put into practice the course of action to decide that has been planned in the base function. Through this process, managers look for all the tools, training, education and money needed to execute the plan or project. Without organization no plan is worth the paper it’s printed on.
The third core process involves “Directing” this function helps the management to control and supervise the actions of the staff and resources being used. This helps them to assist the team in achieving the company's goals and also accomplishing their personal or career goals as well and can be tools for motivation, communication, department dynamics, and department leadership. Directing requires very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to adjust to varying styles with your staff or team!
The last area I’ll focus on is “Controlling” or the follow-up process of examining performance, comparing actual against planned actions, and taking corrective action as necessary. It’s a continual process and it does not occur only at the end of specified periods. Even though managers may evaluate performance at the end of the year, they also monitor performance throughout the year and also through a project life cycle. Controlling gives managers power over the process and direction through the use of effective measurement tools.
In short management has many functions. These functions both can teach us about the need to execute and stay the course and can use help us ensure we as managers get better results.
