MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: Management Behavior
In many cases businesses find the merging of their company with another a successful business strategy. Due to InterClean merging with EnviroTech many changes will take place in the near future. It is important that each employee not panic and keeps his or her work ethic intact. Due to the merger many job positions will be changing and positions may be lost or added. This memo will discuss management strategies that will aid in this transitional period within InterClean. First this memo will address how the behavior of management can affect the productivity of his or her workers. Next, the types of management action that align with employment laws and those that do not. Last, practices for working within a diverse work environment.
Management has a huge effect on their employees. The majority of the time it is a positive influence, however at times management can have a negative effect on their employees. When I was a teenager I worked for a deli. This deli was nationally known and has many employees and managers. I had a manager who had been with the company for 10 years and was well known for his amazing influence on his employees. A few months after I started working for him he was offered a job managing a five star restaurant in Florida, he could not pass up the opportunity. After making the decision to accept the position in Florida things started to drastically change. Because he knew he was leaving soon, his behavior and work ethic began to deteriorate. He began goofing off with the employees and the attitude around the deli was much more relaxed, relaxed to the point that it was affecting service. Because the attitude was so relaxed he began to be more comfortable and developed friendships with his employees. These simple friendships slowly started to develop into more than just friendships in his mind. Things got really out of hand when one of my co-workers filed a sexual harassment complaint against our manager. In addition to the sexual harassment, productivity and service in the deli had noticeably changed and it was proved in the numbers. Because of his lack of responsibility he was actually let go a few months earlier than expected and a new manager was brought in to take over. The new manager had a lot to fix but was able to bring the deli back to what it was before. As you can see from this example the attitudes and behaviors of management has a huge effect on the employees and the company as a whole. During this merger we expect all management to maintain our strict standards and policies. Just because the structure of the company is changing does not mean that out attitudes and operations should change at all. If the employees attitudes are changed by the managers it can have a big effect on the company. “An individual to the organization that makes it difficult to leave. Managers are interested in employees’ job satisfaction and commitment principally because of the relationship between attitudes and behavior. They assume that employees who are dissatisfied with their jobs and who are not committed strongly to their organizations will tend to be absent or late for work, to quit more often, and to place less emphasis on customer satisfaction than those whose attitudes are positive. Poor job attitudes therefore lead to lowered productivity and organizational performance.” (University of Phoenix)
When it comes to letting employees go management should be aware of possible lawsuits and legal liabilities. With our older employees we can’t just throw them by the wayside, the age Discrimination in Employment act protects them from being let go because of their age alone. It is also important to consider people with other differences such as sex, race, and sexual orientation that are protected by several civil rights acts.
Due to our merger we will be introducing new employees who will offer different and diverse attitudes and business ideas. Whenever members of diverse groups come together the possibility of unfair discrimination can exist. As was mentioned earlier civil rights laws have been passes to provide remedies for employees who feel they have been discriminated against. Failure to ignore these issues can result in costly lawsuits and lost production.
