Introduction
The purpose of this memo is to discuss the importance of your behavior during the merger with EnviroTech. It is very important that you understand how your behavior affects the productivity of your employees. You must also be aware of the law and how it affects our company. Also, you must be aware of the consequences of not following the law. The last thing I would like to discuss is how to handle working within a diverse environment.
How a Manager’s Behavior Can Affect the Productivity of His or Her Workers
The behavior of our management staff could have a negative or positive effect on the productivity of our employees, depending on how we conduct ourselves. According to Cascio “line managers have authority (the organizationally granted right to influence the actions and behavior of the workers they manage), they have considerable impact on the ways workers actually behave.” (Cascio, 2006, p7). With that being said it is important for us, as managers, to embrace this change. Our employees will look to us for guidance on how they should react to this merger; therefore we must lead by example. If we display negative attitudes about the merger our employees will have negative attitudes however, if we have positives ones our employees will be positive. Such attitudes can and will affect the performance of our employees. If people feel like this merger will lead to them being unemployed or unfairly treated they will not continue to work to the best of their abilities. We want our employees to feel at ease and secure in their jobs so that they will continue to be productive and make this transition as smooth as possible.
Types of Management Actions That Align With Employment Laws and Those That Do Not and Explains Outcomes and Possible Resolutions
Employment laws have been created to protect the employer as well as the employee. There are state and federal laws that protect against discrimination and sexual harassment. In addition there are laws to protect those workers with chronic illnesses and those with family members who are chronically ill. We have a zero tolerance policy for the breaking of these laws. If we find that any of these laws along with the rules and regulations of this company have been broken we will conduct a thorough investigation and act accordingly. Any violations that are brought to your attention it is your duty to report them immediately so that we may investigate. As managers you must ensure that you are in compliance with all the employment laws because as I previously stated your actions and behavior will have an effect on your employees. If they see you breaking rules and laws they will feel that it is okay for them to do so. If you have any questions regarding what laws apply to our company please contact your management so that we can go over them with you.
Best Practices for Working within a Diverse Work Environment
Diversity and culture are often times thought of as only dealing with different races and creeds when in fact diversity and culture apply all differences. In our case it applies to two different organizations merging into one. “A key source of problems in mergers, acquisitions, and strategic international alliances is differences in corporate cultures.” (Cascio, 2006 p 123). In addition “Corporate cultures may differ in many ways, such as the customs of conducting business, how people are expected to behave, and the kinds of behaviors that get rewarded” (Cascio, 2006 p 123). The employees that you manage today may not be the same set of employees that you manage once the merger is completed. You should be prepared to have teams that consist of both EnviroTech and InterClean employees. Also, you should be prepared for a shift in your team’s culture. As a manager you must embrace the differences in your new an old employees, it is these differences that will help move our newly formed company into the forefront. I am sure that the employees form EnviroTech will do things differently that we do things here at InterClean. Do not dismiss their way of doing thing because it could be better than the ways you are used to. The diversity on your teams could include employees that have been working for years as well as those that are just out of college. If your team was all male before it could be both male and female. Whatever the new makeup of your team it will be important for you to embrace each other’s differences and make those differences work together to create a new culture, one that will work for everyone on the team but more importantly one that will help maintain and or increase productivity.
Conclusion
The merger between InterClean and EnviroTech is going to create a great deal of change for all involved. We must be aware of our behavior, the law, and how to work in a diverse environment.
