After analysing the the novel "Maestro", written by Peter Goldsworthy and the unknown photography of 'Last Jew of Vinnitsa' it is evident that the composers are allowing the audience to distinctievly visualise various the concepts of World War 2 and the after effects on an individual. By portraying symbloic images through similies, metphors, symbolism, allegory and the use of descriptive and emotive language in "Maestro" the composer accuately incorporates themes such as power, society's attitude towards cruelty and violence, culture and the obsession with perfection to create distinctive images and emotions.
To distinctively visualise the reciever must consider the setting;
Maestro- moist, humpid, damp, Darwin- strong sense of emotion and sexuality.
Last Jew in Vinnitsa- black and white colour technique empathises the depressing dark sky and dry land- negative tone.
Maestro- Pauls perspective from he was 15, arrogant, self centered.
-Opens with Pauls first encounter with Maestro- descriptive language"a boozers incandescent glow'- town drunk- misleading- his appearace foreshadows his personal and culture issues in Keller's past- associated with the extermination of Jewish Culture
Picture- central factor- last Jew in the area of Vinnitsa- lighting reflecting off his face- dark toned photograph- Nazis onlooking.
Maestro- keller resents the extermination-shock that genocide occured in the civilized centers of Europe creates a bitter contempt for Vienna "nothing could ever make me homesick"- The photograph is sybloic for this- Keller lost his trust in any society and culture and refuses to conform to another- his move to the low cultural areaa, Darwin, demonstrates this- contrast Paul's community and social family.
Both Text- Victimized by abuse of power.
Maestro-Jimmy Pappas foreshadows Keller's experience with Hitler and Nazis.
Keller- renowned musician in Vienna, "becoming so visible that nothing can touch him"- believed he and his family were exempt from World War 2 as Hitler and the Nazis enjoyed his music- his wife and son murdered- people believed he was dead as he fled the country so quickly- he changed after his experience- paul describes him who know him pre-world war 2 and is shocked at the response of "if we are discussing the same man, how different our two versions"- Keller regrets being naive- teaches Paul by giving me the 'textbooks' which filled with horrific stories and symbloic for human cruelty , selfishness and stupidity all inflicted by power being put into the wrong hands.
Photo- ambigunity- first it suggest the photo graph was taken to celebrate the massacre of 28000 Jews from Vinnitsa and its surrounding areas, although as societies attitudes towards cruelty and violence have developed the photograph reflects the extent of prejudice, violence and conflict in World War 2. The definition may vary depending on the resever but the concept of domance and power does not change. It displays a member of Einsatzgruppe D about to shooot a Jewish man knelling before a filled mass grave in vinnitsa, Ukranine, in 1941. The victims are emblematic for all jewish in World War 2 and much like Keller, represent lack of power.
Societys attitude towards violence and cruelty is depicted though Maestro and reflects similar images that the photo displays. The Nazis are a prime example of how those in control of a society uses power to gain their visions of perfection.
The desire for perfection is also reflected through Maestro by Pauls visions of perfection on subjects ranging from music to sexuality. His father influences Paul's idea of perfection. he refused to teach him, as he believes Keller will make him successful. Paul draws perfection from others untill Keller educated Paul about the funamentals of life through music metaphors " we must know when to move on, to search to long for perfection can paralyse". Paul's vision of sexual perfection and presented to him, and due to his obsession he is unfaithful. This gives a sense of immaturity although this incident creates Paul to realise his true emotions that distinctively depicts an image of growth and maturity. by the end of the noval, Paul has not accomplished the standard of perfection he desires and he was unable to reconfnise he could not be a virtuoso.
Seeking perfection can also be linked to the Nazi genocide, which is based on the concept of racial perfection as he murdered all Jewish invisioning blue eues and blonde hair to be perfect. This linkss with Keller's naivety and the negativity of societies views of violence and demonstrateds cruelty, providing a clear image of Keller's hatred. This idea also shown by the pit of dead Jews infront of the two protagonist in the photo.
Though techniques and distinctive imagery the composers provide resources of themes to educate and audience of WW2 and its long team affects.
