Luis Perez Case Study
Luis Perez is a forty one year old immigrant from Argentina. His parents, eight kids and his wife came to the United States looking for more opportunities for his children. He was successful in Argentina with his winery business so he purchased a small piece of land so he could continue in the business. Luis is a family man who supports his family any way necessary and is the primary decision maker. Luis has found it very stressful in everyday life and needs help. This paper will discuss the hardships that Luis has encountered since he and his family has moved to the United States.
There are many strong influences on Luis' behavior. Luis is a family man. Even though he is sick and dealing with financial burdens including the cost of his father’s funeral he still pushes himself to the limit just to bring money in for the family. Another influence would be his wife Maria. Maria has known Luis her entire life. They married young and have been together ever since. Maria has no family, so Luis is the only family she has. Luis has plans to pass the family business to his oldest son Rolando. His hopes and dreams for Rolando push Luis to better his son’s life.
As Luis transitions from middle adulthood to late adulthood he will go through many changes. As Luis keeps pushing himself at work, he will get sicker. He already has an illness he will eventually stop working and then all the duties will be pushed onto his oldest son Rolando. As it is, Rolando does not want to continue in his father’s business and wants to go to further his education. Luis is forty one and has his ninth child on the way. The stress of another child, his financial burdens and the stress of the loss of his father is only making his transition harder and will cause him to have continued issues with his health.
One of my biggest issues with Luis’ health situation is that by him being an immigrant to the United States, he is not eligible for medical benefits. The fact that his father passed away causes an issue in his stress level. By not having insurance, he has no way to seek psychiatric help. He is in poor physical health and by not having insurance he is unable to receive the medical care that he needs. Luckily for him, his children will be covered regardless of their immigration status are eligible for Medicaid. His wife will not be eligible for Medicaid, but once the baby is born, he will be covered. They can choose to apply for food stamps which can help with some of the financial burdens. The adults will not be eligible, but they will receive food stamps for the children. Church played a huge role in the Perez family’s life in Argentina. I would try to help the family find a church with resources available to help possibly with transportation and fellowship. Luis’ mother and wife could greatly use some spiritual guidance and relief. That alone could help some of the stress on Luis and help prevent some of the unhappiness within the family.
I live in a county in Georgia with an extremely large population of Hispanic immigrants. I also work for the Department of Family and Children Services and have to deal with a large number of Hispanics on a daily basis. At times I get frustrated at the amount of problems receiving benefits that they have. Regardless of the immigration status, I do not like the fact that the resources available for Hispanics are so limited. I have been working with some Hispanic employees at work to develop an assistance program where we can basically be a one stop shop instead of sending them all over town looking for help. Hopefully we will compile enough resources and other counties in our area will develop similar programs for the immigrant population in their areas.
