Long term Medicare/Medicaid Chapter 1 Summary Long –Term Care is an assessment of an individuals need for long term care. Long term care can be a broad range of services over a given period of time. There are many different levels of care an individual can receive or be assessed for. Many persons think that long-term care is nursing home facilities. This idea is far from the truth, most care facilities are either acute care meaning short stays to rehabilitate the individual after injury to their previous level of functioning or Long-term care is the understanding of an individual persons needs for reduced physical and cognitive impairments. Assessing the individual for care is done by a healthcare professional. The types of needs greatly affected where a person will be treated for long-term care. Activities of daily living (ADL’s) are one of the many things that may be addressed as well as instrumental activities of daily living (IADLS). ADL’s are the basics of everyday living that include bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, and eating. IADLS are the normal activities related to outside activities such as grocery shopping, meal prep, housework, using the telephone, managing money and medication. The need for Long-term care is a growing need because of persons living longer, advancement in technology and the aging population. Much of long-term care is done in home or in assisted living centers. Persons needing the care are mostly women. Paying for services is mostly the responsibility of the individual, but some individuals are eligible for government assistance. Most persons prefer staying in their own homes and family and friends known as nonprofessional see to their care, but this can be overwhelming for them at times. Adult daycare and other local community facilities are set in place to help lessen the stress on everyone involved with the care. A large variety of different options are available for the individual in long-term care.
