Bubble Gum Lab Report Alyssa Carboni Teacher: Mr. Brown Block: 1(B) 4 September 2010 PURPOSE: What happens to the mass of gum after it has been chewed' Is there a correlation between the mass of gum lost and the type of gum' Why does gum lose its flavor' HYPOTHESIS: 1. If gum is chewed, then the mass will stay the same. 2. This will happen because mass is determined by the amount of matter, and the amount of matter will remain unchanged after the gum is chewed. MATERIALS: • Wrigley’s Bubble Gum with the wrapper • Trident Bubble Gum with the wrapper • Dubble Bubble Gum with the wrapper • Pen or Pencil • Stopwatch or time tracking utensil • Scale (Capable of measuring in grams) • Safety equipment PROCEDURES: 1. Mass a Wrigley’s piece of gum, including the wrapper. Record. 2. Chew the gum vigorously for 5 minutes, saving the wrapper. 3. After being chewed for 5 minutes, wrap it back in the wrapper and mass it again. Record. 4. Find the difference in mass. Record. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 for Dubble Bubble and Trident. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: o Beware of bubbles popping, could affect eyes, therefore, use safety goggles. o Don’t share pieces of gum with other members. These figures are back by a trial for each piece. CHARTS AND GRAPHS: [pic] CALCULATIONS: Mass of Gum with Wrapper – Mass of Gum with Wrapper After Chewed = Difference QUESTION: If someone chewed three pieces the Wrigley’s gum each day for one year, they would consume approximately 1565.85g of the substance. This answer was found by multiplying the 1.43g Wrigley’s lost in my experiment by three for the amount of pieces each day, then multiplied by 365 in order to figure out the amount for one year. CONCLUSION: The purpose of this lab was to see whether the mass of the gum changes and if there is a correlation between the mass and type. This purpose was furthered by the questioning of if it loses its flavor or not. The mass of the gum, according to my data, shows that it changed after being chewed. Also, a direct correlation between specific gum’s mass and type is evident. Dubble Bubble gum’s mass differed the most from the original mass with its wrapper to the mass of it after being chewed, being a significant 5.74g. The flavor of the Dubble Bubble gum was lost the fastest, our group concluding that it was made from the cheapest material. Furthermore, my hypothesis was disproven based on the fact that each individual piece of gum’s mass did change. [pic]
