The novel Lockie Leonard Human Torpedo, Lockie Leonard faces a number of momentous challenges. Lockie Leonard has the challenge of being and outsider and also the challenge on with Lockie has to fit in at his new school while he was being bullied, the challenge that he has to face everyday his family and as well the challenge Lockie Leonard has to face his fears and talk to Vicki Streeton. Tim Winton uses a number of language devices; the most popular Language device that Tim Winton uses is the informal language there is a lot of informal language thou out the book. One of the adolescent changes which Lockie Leonard copes with is being a outsider. Lockie Leonard starts at a new school called Angelus high school and finds that he is not cool at all. The locals targeted Lockie Leonard earlier in the book when the locals put vegemite in his pants. Lockie Leonard is challenged quite extensively and he is strong-minded to get them back good. This experience is located on pages 16 to 17 where Lockie Leonard is beaten with vegemite in the boys toilets. Tim Winton uses informal language like when he used “pong, tricky bits, dunnies and lots more”. The surroundings are unpleasant and the actions are as well. Tim Winton’s language indicates Lockie Leonard’s discomfort. This paragraph is similar to the challenge which Lockie Leonard faced when he was being bullied around the town. One challenge, which Lockie Leonard faced was getting bullied. His classmates and the people in the town consider Lockie Leonard a city boy and did not have a strong idea who he really was; this is shown in the first surfing experience. This is probably Lockie Leonard most considerable challenge and he chooses to show off his mad surfing skills and who he really is in front of all the locals at the beach. Tim Winton likes to use surfing language/jargon words like “grommet, barrel, fully, sick, keg, going off, no way, kook, hills, reef, clean” and many more this is shown on page 11 in the book, this surfing language is used to highlight the strong surfing culture. This challenge and coping mechanism is different to Lockie Leonards challenge on that he has to cope with his family. Another challenge Lockie Leonard had to face was dealing with his family members. Lockie Leonard had a lot of crazy things going on in his life; his dad was the new cop in the town had a mum that was trying to teach Lockie Leonard about sex and a little brother that always pee’s his bed. This is located all over the novel, but there is one event in the when Lockie Leonards mum buys him a little green booklet that tells and shows Lockie all about sex. Tim Winton uses informal language a lot in the book Lockie Leonard Human Torpedo words such as “geez, oi, mate, pros and inverts”. In the book you can tell how Tim Winton shows the environment it is very awkward has Lockie and his mum is talking. Tim’s language indicates Lockie Leonard’s discomfort. This challenge is different to the challenge Lockie Leonard has to face talking to Vicki Streeton. There is another big challenge Lockie Leonard has to face and that is talking to the Vicki Streeton. Well Lockie Leonard moved in to a new town, new school and he sees this hot pretty girl called Vicki Streeton and he likes her a lot, sometimes he even spy’s on Vicki Streeton. Well there are a few scenes in the book Lockie Leonard which Vicki Streeton and Lockie interacted, but the main one is when Lockie Leonard was surfing until his arms felt like second hand sausages and got out and then tried to get his new wetsuit off, but it would not come off, but than Vicki came and saved the day. This big event is shown on pages 38 and 39 where Lockie Leonard and Vicki Streeton interact at the beach. Tim Winton uses informal language in like almost every page in this beautiful book in this event he uses words like “yeah, snapping, tricky bits, groin, yeph”. These are some of the informal language in the two pages. Tim Winton tells the reader what the environment around Lockie Leonard and Vicki Streeton. Winton shows how Lockie Leonard is feeling when he is taking off the wetsuit. In conclusion Lockie Leonard the human torpedo has a lot of challenges, changes and coping with things. The challenge of being and outsider and also the challenge on with Lockie has to fit in at his new school while he was being bullied, the challenge that he has to face everyday his family and as well the challenge Lockie Leonard has to face his fears and talk to Vicki Streeton. As you can see Tim Winton uses a number of language devices; the most popular Language device that Tim Winton uses is the informal language there is a lot of informal language thou out the book.
