Literary Terms Story:
Super Bowl XLIII
It was February 1, 2009 and the biggest day in the year for some. It was Super Bowl XLIII (43). Featuring a matchup of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals, this was the first Super Bowl that I was going to watch. The game was one of the most talked about game but for different reasons than other Super Bowls. It was talked about for the major differences between the quarterbacks, how Arizona has always won when being the underdog in the games they played and how Pittsburgh could become the first franchise to earn its sixth Super Bowl.
Football games always started and ended with the quarterback being in charge. In this matchup, the quarter backs were Kurt Warner for Arizona and Ben Roethlisberger for Pittsburgh. They had two very different styles of play. Warner was the calmer, finesse type quarterback making everything look good. On the other side, Roethlisberger was the type that will do anything to win. He will rush the ball himself, tackle if he needed to and just fight though the whole game to give his team the chance to win. If they were compared, they were like night and day, happy and sad. (Contrast) This kind of game that featured two quarterbacks with two different styles made the game so much better.
The field looked as if it was new grass, the fans screaming their lungs out (Hyperbole), and at 6:28 p.m., the long awaited game finally started. About one billion people worldwide were to see this game. The first quarter was not very exciting. The only score in the quarter was a field-goal with 9:50 remaining in the quarter, Jeff Reed completed an eighteen yard field goal to put the Steelers up 3.
The second quarter was much more exciting. The quarter featured a total of three touchdowns. With 14:09 remaining in the half, Gary Russel of the Steelers capped a 11 play, 69 yard drive with a 1 yard run to give Pittsburgh the early 10 – 0 lead. Arizona had not just made it to the Super Bowl for nothing. The Cardinals offense came back down the field. Ben Patrick of the Cardinals received a 1 yard pass from Kurt Warner with 8:43 remaining to put Arizona on the board. This touchdown finished off an amazing 9 play, 83 yard drive. Arizona wanted to rally and get the lead before the half ended but Pittsburgh had other plans. With eighteen seconds left, Arizona had a great chance to get a touchdown when they were on the Steelers 3 yard line. Pittsburgh was like a lion in battle. (Simile) James Harrison intercepted the ball and ran 100 yards down the field to score a touchdown for the Steelers. He set a new Super Bowl record for the longest return for an interception. Going into the half, Pittsburgh had a great 17-7 lead.
During halftime, I was nervous. I am not a fan of either team but I detested the Steelers. Therefore I had wanted the Cardinals to win. After a long half with 30 second commercials that cost a whopping 2.6 million dollars. The second half was like the first quarter. The only score was a field goal. Jeff Reed of the Steelers completed a 21 yard field goal to end a long 16 play, 79 yard drive. This drive had taken more than half the quarter and a total of 8:39 to be exact of the fifteen minute quarter. Pittsburgh led 20-7.
Finally, the fourth quarter had come. It was time for the Cardinals to come back and make a game out of this. They came out and did what they had to do. With 7:41 left, Larry Fitzgerald, called the best receiver in the game, receives a 1 yard pass from Kurt Warner to make it a six point deficit. Then with 3:34 left, Arizona’s Graham punted the ball to the Pittsburgh one yard line. Pittsburgh had to put together a drive here but Ben Roethlisberger made Peyton Manning look perfect. (Allusion) Pittsburgh gave up a safety and turned over their possession. With 2:16 to play and the score in favour of the Steelers, Arizona had one last chance to put together a game winning drive.
Kurt Warner was in shotgun position, and it was second down and 10 yards to go. He passed the ball to Fitzgerald up the middle and he ran a total of 64 yards to score the touchdown. Arizona finally led 23 – 20. If Arizona could have held on, it would have benn the biggest deficit erased in the history of the Super Bowl. Like Arizona, the Steelers had one last chance to win the game. With 1:02 left, Ben Roethlisberger completed a 40 yard pass to Holmes to spot the ball at the Arizona 6 yard line. All through the stadium, fans cheered loud and proud, while other had sat there nervous, with a shocked expression, sweat running through their forehead, trying to predict the outcome of the last 48 seconds to in Super Bowl XLIII (43). (Imagery)
Ben Roethlisberger tried a deep pass to the left to Holmes but it went through his hands. On second down and 10 yards to go, Roethlisberger tried the same play again but to the right side. This time with three defenders on him, Holmes caught the ball and stayed inbound to score the touchdown. The Arizona Cardinals challenged the call and upon review, the touchdown stood and the Pittsburgh Steelers had a 27-23 lead and were thirty-five seconds from winning the Super Bowl. Kurt Warner tried all his best but was sacked and on a fumble, the defence recovered. Pittsburgh had possession and waited for time to run. (Personification) Finally, the clock hit 0:00 and the Pittsburgh Steelers were crowned the champions of Super Bowl XLIII. Sometimes seasons are roller-coasters and Arizona had done a great job to get on a streak to get to the Super Bowl, but the streak finally ended.(Metaphor) At the end, it ended like Super Bowl XLII when the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots with thirty-five seconds left to defy all the odds against them.
