Learning Outcome
By the end of the lesson, students will know how to care, maintain, and make informed decisions on choice of clothes
General Objective
Students will be able to:
- Care and maintain their clothes with proper washing methods and stain removal techniques
- Increase life management skills and save money by properly caring for clothing and learning care labeling requirements for textile products
- Perform basic hem and button maintenance procedures.
- Recognize the different types of prints and colours for different types of body shapes
Specific Instructional Objective:
Students will be able to:
- state the different natural and manufacture stain removal products
- explain how to use stain removal products
- State and understand care labels using words or symbols
- Identify and apply appropriate clothing care practices into everyday living
- identify the most effective and value for money method
- State the steps to attach a button and repair a hem
- Identify different type of prints on that suits different types of silhouettes

1. Stain 3 swatches with ink and 3 swatches with chocolate
2. Use 3 different stain removal technique on each different stains
- Baking soda (6 tbsp + warm water)
- Vinegar (soaked stain area with vinegar)
- Bleaching powder (wash with bleach)
3. Wash and dry “treated” swatches

- clothes that has been washed out of alignment

• Teacher will introduce and inform students the purpose of learning clothes care using the resources stated above.
• Teacher to ask “Class what you think has happened to the clothes that are hang right in front on the board'”
• Teacher will then go on to explain to students that to avoid facing those problems with their clothes they will need to learn ways to maintain and care for it.

Bus-stop Activity 1: Stain Detective
• Purpose of activity is for students to learn various stain removal technique, make comparisons between techniques and identify the effectiveness between natural and manufactured products and the cost effectiveness of techniques used.
• Teacher will exhibit 3 swatches of cloth which has been stained with ink and 3 swatches of cloth that has been stained with chocolate
• Students will observe pre-prepared stained samples which have been treated with natural and manufactured stain removal products.
• Students to discuss their observation
Bus-stop Activity 2: Case symbols decoded!
• Students are required to decode the care labels on the Decoding Board by identifying what does the care symbols mean
• Students will need to use the Hint Chart - “Consumer Guide to Care Symbols” in their paper or on the board to decode and encode the care instructions on the worksheet.
• Students will need to predict the instructions for various care symbols on the care labels in the “decoding” board and on the worksheet
• Specifically inform students to decode the symbols for the first and draw care symbols for the second.
• Students will need to attempt to their worksheet at the end
Bus-stop Activity 3: Unscramble Me
• Purpose of the activity is for the students to learn basic survival skills which are mending button and hem
• Students will be given 2 sets of picture puzzles
- 1 set of picture puzzle consists of methods on attaching a button to a clothing item
- Another consists of methods on how to mend a hem of a clothing item
• Students will have to figure out the instructions on how to sew a hem and attach a button as a group
Bus-stop Activity 4: Deciphering prints
• Purpose of activity is for students to identify the types of prints that are suitable for which body shape and structure.
• Students will need to refer to the pictures displayed and answer the questions corresponding to the bus stop activity on the worksheet
• Students will need to discuss and work together within their allocated group and answer the worksheet given based on the bus stop activity.
• Students are given 3 minutes to answer the worksheet given to them
• Teachers will displace paper dolls of different body sizes/shapes which are dressed in different types of prints and colours
• Eg: a doll with a round body shape will be dressed up in the different types of prints namely: Vertical stripes, horizontal stripes, small pattern in prints and big patterns on prints.
• The students will need to decide which of the examples (paper dolls) will portrays a more flattering image
• They will discuss in their groups and fill up the given worksheet
• Handouts will be given to the students by the end of the lesson.
• The handouts will contain the right answers and elaboration to the station activity.

-Students will start on their assigned stations and proceed to the next station when time is up, they will continue in such fashion till all stations have been completed
-Teacher will monitor and facilitate activity • Students will conduct activity based on what was instructed
• Students may either move to the wrong stations or to carry out the activity incorrectly, teachers to correct them if this happens

Bus-stop Activity 1: Stain Detective
• Teachers to ask students on their observations obtained from the Bus-stop activity
• Question students on the effectiveness of the 3 different stain removal products, and which is more value for money
• Teacher to flash the swatches again and explain to students the advantages and disadvantages of each stain removing product
• Teacher to state some other non cleaning agent which can be used to remove other common stains
Bus-stop Activity 2: Case symbols decoded!
• Ask the students “Will a clothing label influence what items you purchase'”
• Ask students “Why is it important to care and maintain your clothes'”
• Ask the students “Why is it important for you to understand these clothing care symbols'”
• Explain that Care labels can be seen in 2 forms on apparels (words and in symbols).
• Tell them that complex systems (complex care symbol) usually have simple patterns within the system.
• To understand this system, ask the students to examine the chart to locate any patterns.
• Review each process beginning with washing. What is the basic symbol'
• Compare the temperature symbols through the washing, drying, and ironing processes.
(1) temperature/heat settings: hot/high – three dots, warm/medium – two dots, cold/low - one dot;
• (2) Warning: “X”– do not; (3) the order of the symbols follow consumer practice: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and dry cleaning.
• Ask the students to identify the symbols in the decoding board

Mending buttons and hems
• Teacher to summarise ways to repair clothes such as when the hem is unstitched or when the button falls off.
Prints
• Teacher to summarise the different types of body shapes that people may inherit, and how students can dress themselves well and enhance their features with the different types of prints and colours available commercially.

Teacher will ask each group to give a learning point based upon what they have learned from the entire lesson
Teacher will prompt student for a more elaborated response if answers are too general. E.g.
1. State the natural products used to remove stains'
2. What are the materials /tools they need to sew a button'
