Kawanda Alexander HN 144: Unit 9 Assignment Kaplan University In this paper I will be talking about a man named LeRoy Karas and the different struggles in his life. Leroy started drinking and smoking in high school and it carried on into college while he pursued his life as a football player jock his partying got worse and he ended up dropping out of college because he had a child on the way. Leroy had been married twice and had six children who he wasn’t making enough money to take care of. Leroy was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and still continued to drink and smoke on a daily not caring about his health. He also had a brother named Elroy that he wasn’t close to and didn’t have a relationship with, whom had a great job, wife and kids, and a pretty good life. Referring back to LeRoy’s ecomap he faced a lot of stressful issues because of his behaviors which caused negative outcomes on his relationships with others as well as influenced his bad behaviors. Some of the strongest influences in LeRoy’s behavior were his first wife getting pregnant so he dropped out of college to support them by getting a job, but that only made his drinking and smoking worse. Rachel ended up leaving him so he had to pay child support and still be able to try to maintain his habits and things began to go more and more downhill for LeRoy. Leroy wasn’t getting paid much working as a carpenter here and there because he lost his job as a construction worker. I also feel that his brother Elroy’s success made him feel as if he wasn’t equal to him and because of his brother’s ongoing success since they were children I believe that LeRoy envied his brother because his parents were always proud of him and praising him for his accomplishments. Leroy is now 64 years old and has health issues and still drinking and smoking on a daily. He is also in his later adult years and should be focused on trying to get healthy and maintain the rest of his years of his life. Leroy is not thinking about the rest of his life he is only thinking of right now and as he continues to not change his behaviors his body and mind will start to deteriorate because of years and years of consuming things that he knew were unhealthy for him. It’s going to take for LeRoy to possibly be on his death bed before he wakes up and realizes that he is going to die in his addiction, but hopefully he changes before it gets to that point. It is obvious that LeRoy needs treatment and also needs to talk to someone about his problems so that way he can move past these things. Next, if I were working with LeRoy I would probably be biased towards any of the systems affecting his behavior because those things shouldn’t be a reason for you to drink or smoke. These are problems and everyone has them, if everyone in America drank and used substances to cover up their problems this would be a very messed up world. I would handle this situation by letting LeRoy know that there are other ways to handle what you’re going through, let’s do this another way. It is important to consider different stereotypes and misconceptions like the fact that he wasn’t a good father, or because he didn’t use heroin his usage wasn’t that bad. There are a lot of different things to look at in a situation like this. I learned that in a situation like this if I worked with a client like LeRoy to get to the bottom of the problem. I would also be attending as well as listen to him so that he is aware that I am listening to what he has to say. I would also let him know that he has already made the first step and that is by admitting he has a problem, facing it and talking about it. I would tell LeRoy that he needs treatment in order to move past his obstacle. I think that by working with people and helping others that it does change your attitude in the human service field. It would make me more passionate for my clients and willing to help them at all cost.
