Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950. His entrepreneurial ways began early when he was publishing a student magazine at just 16 years. Branson did not go on to graduate school but in 1970 the now famous Virgin brand had its beginnings in the form of a discount records mail order venture that he and his friend Nik Powell worked on. Branson was awarded a Knighthood in 1999 and became Sir Richard Branson for his contribution to entrepreneurship. Branson is married with two children and currently lives in London. Determination From a tender 19 year old guy, to start up his entrepreneurial venture, he made everyone surprised by his courage and determination. 3 B. Behavioral Theory - Blake and Mouton’s leadership grid He exhibits the country club style leadership style as he has a high concern towards his employees and little attention is paid to achieving results. He has created a fun working atmosphere where all people enjoy being a part rather than simply come to office for work to earn a pay check. He even invites junior crew to his home for parties. He encourages staff to write him with any ideas or suggestions. Either way the employees get a chance to be heard. 4 C. Situational Theory - Hersey & Blanchard’s situational leadership theory The Hersey Blanchard situational leadership model indicates Branson being flexible in considering how he should lead based on the tasks nature. In seeking new business opportunities, he usually adopts the directive behavior, knowing the required tasks and how to perform them. He sets the direction, explain decisions and provide opportunity for clarification. Participation is allowed for employees to share ideas and facilitate in decision making. Upon success of a business venture, Branson places trusts in his staff and their capability to do work and empowers them with full autonomy. 5 2. Modern Approach A. It doesn‟t matter what it is, OR how hard it might seem, “The beginning is the most important part of any work‟‟ there will be many challenges you might get knocked back but in the end, you will make it good luck according to this motto Branson sets the direction for his business, and deeply explain the decisions to their followers and provide opportunity for clarification. Further Branson prefers informal communication at all levels.  Personal Risk Branson is willing to take high business risk as well as personal risk. Branson has developed a level of trust with his top managers by setting the direction and then stepping back to let them navigate. “I come up with the original idea, spend the first three months immersed in the business so I know the ins and outs and then give chief executives a stake in the company and ask them to run it as if it‟s their own….” He integrated his life by staying grounded.
