Leadership Philosophy The purpose of this memo is to articulate in writing my leadership philosophy, what I believe in, what my values and priorities are and what I expect not only of myself but of those in my command. I have been in the Army for over 34 years and have held a variety of positions. I believe in Soldier care, team work, education, and proficiency. My values are very simple and they are; Integrity – Do the right thing, be consistent in your actions, and be honest with yourself and your fellow co-worker. Loyalty – Be faithful to your commitments and devoted to duty and country. Courage – Both physical and moral, strive to overcome weaknesses whether it by trying to pass the APFT, lose weight, whatever that weakness might be, do not give up. Have the moral courage to make the right decisions regardless of how unpopular they may be. Respect – For yourself as well as others, to treat others as you would like to be treated, to be kind to yourself, no one is perfect. Selfless-Service – Do all that you can for the unit, put the welfare of your Soldiers before your own. I strive to live by these values each and every day, and I expect the Soldiers in this command to take these values seriously and hold me accountable them. My first priority is taking care of Soldiers. I believe that a Soldier who feels they are being taken care of will work hard to accomplish the mission. To do this adequately I expect myself to be thoroughly familiar with this unit, its history, our mission, and its personnel and I expect the same commitment from the soldiers in this command. I expect Soldier issues to be taken care of at the lowest level, and to properly use the chain of command to elevate those issues that cannot be resolved. You can expect the command to take those unresolved issued higher for resolution. My second priority is mission accomplishment. We are in the business of training Soldiers, Combat Medics and as such I expect each one of us needs to be proficient in our job and in those skills that we teach. To do this adequately every member must not only be thoroughly familiar with the Programs of Instruction that are used for each course and be exceptionally familiar with the skills taught and comfortable in performing those skills. By every member I mean from the Command team on down to those who are not yet instructors but are in the process of becoming instructor qualified. It will require constant learning to integrate new knowledge into the lessons and skills that we teach those Combat Medics but more importantly professionalism and teamwork. Every Soldier should strive to seek out and take advantage of those opportunities to advance their education. I believe in open, honest, and candid communication therefore, my door is always open. You have the freedom to talk to me at any time and tell me what you think not what you think I want to hear. No unit is perfect and there are many areas in our day to day operation that can be improved upon. I welcome new ideas and ways to improve those day to day operations to enable this unit to run smoothly. I am truly honored to be a part of unit and I know that together we can accomplish great things, and provide realistic and stimulating training to the Soldiers who attend our courses. This leadership philosophy is a fluid document. Part of this philosophy will change to a certain degree as my leadership positions change. Part of this philosophy will remain the same, particularly my core values though I may include other values as I grow and change in my leadership style and leadership roles.
