Leadership Philosophy
My leadership philosophy that supports this command’s vision is relatively simple: to lead by example through actions, behavior, and performance. As a leader, it is my responsibility to articulate a clear and concise vision that encompasses the goals, expectations, and consequences for this unit. The First line Leader’s serve as key leadership nodes within this unit, which will ultimately determine the success or failure of our ability to effectively conduct our mission. Therefore, I expect all leaders within this organization to possess three core attributes: be a leader of character, always set the example for others to follow, and communicate. A leader of character will always choose the “hard right” over the easy wrong; guided by a solid moral compass and core values that mirror the 7 army values. By setting the example, leaders will serve as role models who are competent, fair, consistent, and ethically sound. Additionally, as the mentor, leaders will act as teachers, coaches, and as motivators. Finally, to communicate, a leader will actively participate in the planning, execution, and monitoring of unit activities while helping to remove obstacles that impede success.
1. The following statements represent my Leadership Philosophy that we must ensure as leaders of soldiers that we are working as one team to produce the best trained soldiers in the Army.
a. Proficient caring leaders: I expect proficient leaders to demonstrate caring attitudes toward the soldiers in their charge. We must lead from the front and set the example at all times. Caring for soldiers is the foundation of our organization. The most precious asset we have is each other and above all our soldiers in the organization must truly know we care for them and their families. I am committed to the you and your families, I put great emphasis on the quality of life, proper training and equipment, safety, family support and timely recognition for a job well done.
b. Teamwork: As leaders we must work as a team in every aspect of training. Soldiers need to cooperate with each other and become one. A well-disciplined caring team will build cohesiveness, which is a bond that no force can break. I will personally be involved in individual training and will insist we are trained.
c. Communication: Along with teamwork, communication is what soldiers normally see as a command breakdown. Soldiers must be able to use the chain of command, both formal and informal. I expect leaders to be accessible and approachable in all circumstances.
d. Leadership: This is in no way a zero defects organization. I expect soldiers to make honest mistakes and learn from the experience. You can expect me to make honest mistakes as well. We will learn together. I will insist all soldiers receive counseling weather positive or negative, I expect it to be done completely and professionally. We cannot afford to let our guard down concerning administrative and professional development functions. Leaders are positive, proactive, and always look on the bright side of a crappy situation. Our soldiers deserve it.
e. Loyalty: I expect loyalty not only between the Officer and NCO, but to our soldiers who serve us as well. When we treat all with dignity and respect, you will see loyalty from within the command.
f. Honesty: I expect all leaders to be honest with their soldiers. Soldiers would rather hear the honest bad news from their leaders than untrue gossip from other soldiers.
g. Training: There are few things more important. I firmly believe that we retain our position as the “Quiet Professional” due to steadfast focus on quality training. I believe that the focus of individual training needs to be at ODA and section levels; taught by NCO’s. Train as we fight must always a part of the process. Rehearsals and hands on training are paramount. Do not be afraid to get dirty.
h. A few of my hot buttons
* Bad news does not get better with time, always report issues quickly and precisely.
* Never be late.
* Nobody likes a whiner, if you have a problem, provide a solution.
* It only takes one “aw-shit” to destroy a bunch of “atta-boys”.
* If you can’t say it to someone’s face don’t say it behind their backs.
My Commander’s intent is clear: “Take care of people, Take care equipment, Pay attention to detail and have fun.” Take to heart, and share my vision of a highly successful unit that is known for its professionalism, timeliness, outstanding soldiers and dedication to the mission. I know with a unified message and cooperative team work we will succeed. I look forward to serving with you.
