Leadership Approach
Leadership is one most important concept in the organizational management. Although leadership has many ways of defining, its effectiveness is vital to any organizational environment for the attainment of goals and objectives. Different definitions whether leadership is a process in which, it involves intentional influence over other people, or specialized role, or shared influence, its effectiveness to the organizational environmental success is critical. Characteristics of leaders, followers, and situation are the three types of variables to understand leadership effectiveness (Yukl, 2010).
Leadership effectiveness in influencing people for the intended purpose to facilitate activities in the organizational success is by useful ways of approaches (Yukl, 2010). The means of attraction to influence subordinates, peers, and outsiders in understanding and agreeing in the ways the objectives can be accomplish is determined by the leadership approach. With the proper leadership approach, leaders will influence, facilitate, and prepare his or her subordinate, and peers to meet current work and future challenges ahead (Yukl, 2010).
Overview of Behavioral Approach
Effectiveness of leadership has been the emphasis of the researchers. To understand the effectiveness of leadership, types of variables, such as characteristic of leaders, followers, and situations are research within each category. However, characteristics of leaders, such as traits, behavior, or power are consistent in classifying the leadership approaches. According to Yukl, different approaches in leadership have been research to determine the effectiveness of leadership in the organization. A major research approaches is the behavioral approach (Yukl, 2010).
Some researchers focus on the behavior of the leader and his or her followers. The behavior approach of leadership research started in the early 1950 to determine the responsibilities and duties of the managers on the job. The useful insights of the research examined the categories of manager’s typical pattern of activities, time spent, responsibilities, and his functions (Yukl, 2010). Another category is the way the managers cope with demands, constraint, and role in the event of conflict in the job. The use of descriptive methods, such as data collection by observation, diaries, job descriptions, and anecdotes are included in the research (Yukl, 2010). According to Yukl, the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of leaders differs from the results of behavioral pattern that is appropriate to the situations. Some of the research methods are survey fields with questionnaire, laboratory experiments, field experiments, and the use of critical incidents. The research shows high concern for task objectives and a high concern for relationships (Yukl, 2010).
With the current business scandals and economic condition, the effectiveness of behavioral approach is critical in resolving conflicts, copes with demands, and recognizes opportunities, and overcome constraints. With current changes and innovation the leadership behavioral pattern of interactions on task-oriented behaviors and relations-oriented behaviors are depended on the type of job.
With globalization, workforce diversity, the rapid change of technology, and some of the new forms of organizations that building and maintaining relationships, obtaining and providing information, influencing people, and decision-making are activities of priority in behavioral approach. Sometimes the effectiveness of behavioral approach in leadership is through the interactions with subordinates, peers, superiors, outsiders, and the demands needed to accomplish the objectives and goals (Yukl, 2010).
Strengths and Weaknesses of Behavioral Approach
The strength and weaknesses of behavioral approach leaderships can be determined by the behavior of the leaders. In the research, consideration and initiating structure are the two type of behavior is independent. In consideration, listening, showing concern of the feelings, accepting suggestions, and treating a subordinate as an equal have its strengths and weaknesses. The strengths of effectiveness show fewer grievances, less turnover, and less absenteeism (Yukl, 2010). The weakness in Marilyn’s opinion may create no gap between leaders and subordinates, and favoritism. On the other hand, in initiating structure, the leader role is defined as well as the roles of subordinates and the primary concern is to accomplish tasks, such as assigning task, emphasizing the importance of performance, asking subordinates to follow standards procedures, meeting deadlines, and criticizing poor performance. According to the research, weaknesses of leaders who used initiating structure have more grievances and turnover (Yukl, 2010).
Example of Behavioral Approach
Some of the organization uses combination of the different leadership approach; however, it still leads to the behavioral approach of leadership. According to Yukl, leadership behavior differs between effective and ineffective leaders. These are task-oriented behaviors, relations-oriented behaviors, and participative leadership (Yukl, 2010).
To lead effectively, behavior approach of leaders to his or her subordinate in task-oriented behaviors is through his planning, scheduling the work, coordinating subordinate activities, providing technical assistance, and equipment. Task –oriented behavior are used in the department because of the different divisions, sections, and units. Each sections and unit in the department both used the task-related behavior and relations-oriented behavior in dealing with subordinates and peers because supportiveness, consideration, and understanding in completing the tasks are critical in attaining the goals and objectives.
The culture and mission is to help each other attain goals and objectives to educate the children of Arizona. In the division of the department, mostly the leaders used more of group supervision, group meetings, and facilitate subordinate participation, improve communications, promote cooperation, and facilitate conflict resolutions. The weakness of participative leadership is the conflicting ideas from different members of the division. Sometimes can create differences of opinions and understanding and can be informative as well.
