Leadership Approach Paper Organizational Leadership, LDR/531 December 10, 2012 Introduction The research of leadership one of the approval subjects for discussion inasmuch researchers first recognizing affect that leadership acquire by the prosperity of a business. Although superior education, ascertaining facts vigorously the typical leadership possess a derivative part in the formation of educating the leadership plan of action. This paper is to form a coherent of the main method to the study of leadership, strengths, and weaknesses of leadership approach use in an organization and example. Major Approach to the Study of Leadership The behavior approach is the idea of looking further into what the manager performs daily. The behavior approach began in the early 1950s after many scholars became less hopeful with the trait method and start to notice what managers do on-the-job” (Yukl, 2010, p. 35). Yukl (2010), analysis in his “approach was the assumption that some people are natural leaders, endowed with certain traits not possessed by other people” (p. 13). Within the behavior approach there are two categories of information that analyzed. Researchers are identifying how managers can utilize his or her time, daily activities, responsibilities, and expected functions of the manager (Wolverton, Gmelch, Montez, & Nies, 2001). Researchers are investigating how managers deal with the job demands and time constraints. To conduct the research, researchers relied on data collected by direct observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The other category of information studied is identifying how the managers are effective leader (Bass, 1990). Researchers relied on a survey field study, included a questionnaire. Stogdill feel sure of the truth because “the research showed that no traits were universally associated with effective leadership and that situational factors were also influential” (Stogdill, 1974, p. 49). Strengths and Weaknesses Behavior approach has strength and weaknesses to it approach. The main strength of the behavior approach is to focus solely on behavior that has been observed. Further, behavior approach has proven to be an effective experiment, which the data can be observed and manipulated. This approach concentrates on the current state of the research subject and his or her actions. The weakness of the behavior approach it can be redundant. The approach assumes the most important thing is observable behavior and the approach ignores other aspects, such as cognitive abilities. Example of Martin Luther King Middle School Work part-time at Martin Luther King Middle School in Georgia recently developed a teacher evaluation process a teacher evaluation process to be used in the school. During this process he or she employed a participative leadership style of decision-making. The teachers’ goals are to create a model that was transparent, reflective of the school’s operation culture, and driven from the ground-up by faculty members. Further, the teachers created a committee of six faculty members to take the lead in designing the model. The committee included both new teachers and veterans to bring in the most diverse experience to the committee. Therefore, though brainstorming, exploration of various models, and asking probing questions, the committee came up with a model that the National Association of Independent Schools promoted favorably in school publications (National Association of Independent Schools, 2012). Conclusion In conclusion, this paper has provided an overview of the major approach of the study of leadership. The behavior approach is the idea of looking further into what the manager performs daily. The main strength of the behavior approach is to focus solely on behavior that has been observed. The weakness of behavior approach assumes the most important thing is observable behavior and the approach ignores other aspects, such as cognitive abilities. The National Association of Independent Schools in Georgia effectively used participative leadership in developing a new teacher evaluation model in the school. References Bass, B. (1990).
