The Curriculum includes the following courses: Year 1 - LLB Part I Semester I LA 10 B - Constitutional Law- All of the independent states of the Commonwealth Caribbean have written constitutions which represent their basic law. It is therefore crucial that students be exposed very early in their law course to a study of this basic law. The aim of the Constitutional Law course, then, is to provide such exposure. LA 11 B - Criminal Law II- This course builds on Criminal Law1 by considering specific crimes: Homicide, Non-Fatal Offences Against the person, Sexual Offences and Offences Against Property including Law of Forgery. LA 12 B - Law of Contract I- The primary objective of this course is to examine the purpose and scope of the legal protection accorded agreements. To achieve this, the course attempts to deal with the general principles applicable to the types of bargain transactions found in contemporary West Indian society. LA 12 A/LAW 113 - Legal Research & Writing- The objective of this course is to develop within each student certain basic legal skills including: The ability to understand and analyse legal materials; The ability to discern the relevant issues that arise out of any given factual situation, including the ability to disregard the irrelevant; A working familiarity with primary and secondary research materials and the development of an efficient research technique which enables the student to locate relevant materials on a given legal issue relatively quickly; The ability to organise and express, in a concise, coherent and logical form his/her understanding of the relevant material as it applies or relates to the given factual situation or legal issue. LA 13 A Law of Torts I- The law of torts is essentially concerned with regulating the means of redressing losses incurred by a person where the person does not rely on a contractual relationship with that person who caused the loss. The issues considered in this course therefore, concern the type of loss for which the law grants compensation. The course analyses the legal concepts which the court uses and the public policy positions implicit in these concepts. Semester II LA 10 A - Law & Legal Systems- The fundamental objective of this course is to provide students with a knowledge of the historical, institutional and legal context of the operation of law in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The issues dealt with in the course cover not only institutions within the legal system, but also significant legal functionaries within it. LA 11 A - Criminal Law I- This course is intended to expose students to both the general principles that underlie the Criminal Law as well as to some specific crimes recognised by the Criminal Law. The course aims at providing the student with a sufficient breadth and depth of substantive Criminal Law as to allow a thorough appreciation of Criminal Law issues. LA 12 C - Legal Methods FB 10 B - Language Argument FD 11 A - Caribbean Civilization FD 12 A - Science, Medicine & Technology in the Commonwealth Caribbean Year 2 - LLB Part II Semester I LAW 214 - Law of Contract - The primary objective of this course is to examine the purpose and scope of particular areas of the Law of Contract. LAW 215 - Law of Torts I - This course builds on the knowledge developed in Law of Torts 1 and introduces the student to other specific torts. The main focus of this course is to examine the purpose and scope of the particular areas in the Law of Torts 1. It is a case intensive subject. Students are therefore, expected to develop analytical skills in relation to the application of the relevant case law and to understand and distinguish the various tort principles. LAW 217 - Jurisprudence- The general objective of this course is to examine the theories of jurisprudence and provide students with a philosophical approach to understanding the nature of law. LAW 218 - Real Property I- The purpose of this course is to examine the fundamental principles governing the holding, use and disposition of land in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The course emphases language and concepts of property law. LAW 219 - Public International Law I- The objective of this course is to provide an introduction to the principles, customs and rules of International Law. Students after completing this course should be able to tackle most advanced International Law topics. Semester II LAW 221 - Law in Society I- The general objective of this course is to apply Jurisprudence to legal problems in their social context, and examine the nature of the relationship between law and society. LAW 222 - Administrative Law-The course surveys the legal principles of governance by administrative agencies. The course emphasizes judicial control of administrative action but also explores other controls of administrative action. LAW 223 - Equitable Remedies- The range of equitable remedies is very wide and continues so to be. Therefore, the objectives here is to have students focus on specific equitable remedies which reflect recent developments in the area, and analyse the modern approach to the application of the remedies they are studying. LAW 228 - Real Property II- The course builds on the knowledge acquired in Real Property 1 and introduces the students to new concepts and transactions in land law. LAW 229 - Public International Law II- This course builds on the knowledge of Public International Law 1 and introduces advanced topics of International Law. Year 3 - LLB Part III Semester I LAW 311 Law in Society II - The object of the Research Paper is to develop in the student a capacity to conduct research on the topic he chooses and to write it up. He/she is also required to present it at a seminar of staff and students of the department. The Research Paper is assessed on the quality of the dissertation, which should be printed on 10”x8” paper. The topic chosen must be examined in its legal and social context. LAW 312 Company Law - The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the concept of the company, and prepare them, ultimately, to undertake a critical examination of the Law of Corporate Management and the Law of Corporate Finance. LAW 313 Law of Succession- This objective of this course is to examine the law governing the transmission or devolution of property on the death of the owner. LAW 314 Law of Employment- The general objective of this course is to introduce students to the major principles of law which govern industrial relations and trade unions. The course aims at breadth without sacrificing depth and prepares students interested in Employment Law for advanced courses in this area. LAW 315 Insurance Law- This course is intended to have students analyse basic principles of modern Insurance Law as well as introduce them to issues peculiar to this area of law. LAW 316 Family Law I- This course explains the principles and policies which guide the law relating to husband and wife in the Commonwealth Caribbean, including financial provisions and other matters relating to property, as well as proposals for reform. LAW 318 Environmental Law- The course is designed to examine the methods by which law is used to place limits on human activities having impact on the environment. In this context it examines: the scope and development of, and limits to, the common law and equity (both substantive and procedural) in protecting the environment; other regulatory means established primarily by statute and through conventions; and policy issues in the exploitation of resources and protection of the environment. LLB 310 International Environmental Law- The course examines the evolution and content of international law rules which impact on the global environment. In particular, the regulatory system established by treaties and conventions. LLB 312 - Alternative Disputes Resolution- This course aims to enable students to appreciate the nature of ADR; to examine particular applications of ADR techniques to public law issues; and to provide students with a comparison with a court based dispute resolution to public law issues. Semester II LAW 320 - Law of Corporate Finance LAW 322 - Family Law II- This course explains the principles and policies which guide the law relating to children in the Commonwealth Caribbean including proposals for reform LAW 323 - Trade Union Law- The general objective of this course is to introduce students to the major principles of law which govern industrial relations and trade unions. The course aims at breadth without sacrificing depth and prepares students interested in Trade Union Law for advanced courses in that area. LAW 324 - Administration of Trusts & Estates- The primary objective of this course is to provide students with an in depth knowledge of the administration of trusts, including the duties and powers of trustees, and of the administration of the estates of deceased persons, including the duties and powers of executors and administrators. LAW 325 - Caribbean Human Rights Law LAW 327 - Private International Law- From time to time, private law problems arise which may be affected by laws of other jurisdictions, and in respect to which the courts of other jurisdictions may have laid down rules. This course examines the principles on which courts in the West Indies decide how to deal with these rules. LAW 329 - Law of Trusts- The primary objective of the course is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the modern trust. This knowledge is believed to be especially useful in estate planning and tax planning. LLB 321 - Intellectual Property LLB 323 - Law and Development
