Gathering research This is how our police officer was in the 1700’s to 2000’s. Officer’s title started from: Rattle Watch 1700s, Commissioned Officer 1800s, US Marshall 1870s, Roundsman 1900s, Patrolman 1920s, Motorcycle Patrol 1950s, Detective 1960s, State Trooper 1970s, City Police 1990s, and S.W.A.T. 2000s (history America, 2012). In the United States, police officers are seeing as heroes, since they are sworn to protect general population and keep them from harm’s way regardless of the situation; but the truth is, that they do much more than that for their city. It doesn’t take a well educated person to become a police officer but a brave one. Officers are someone who is willing to dedicate their lives in order to protect and serve those in need. In this paper we will research an interest that has been voiced concerning police officers and their duties and will state the purpose behind our research. Through this research it will show an interview structure and will inform you as to some questions that it will be ask. It is common that police officers choose their career just simply because they are following the same path as a family member or is one of his family member’s desire. People choose to follow this career because either their father or their mother or a relative was an officer at one point in time. This type of interest is something that would be great for research. How many people that is following criminal justice career have or had a family member who was or is also a police officer' We can get great information through a simple survey that will require the process of research and interviewing police officers in person or over the phone. One of the first questions that we will try to attempt to answer through our interview process is why people decided to choose a career path in law enforcement area. Research has already shown that police officers have chosen to become officers because they have a personal connection to police work. Family members or friends might be police officers, and these people can often influence their decision to become a police officer too, whether it's out of a desire to continue a family tradition or that these people have made the work sound appealing to them (Chris Brower, 2012). These would be some of the questions that we would ask to police officers during a phone or in a face to face (in person) interview. First we would start with simple questions that we are hoping it will give us enlightening information. “What made you become a police officer'” the adrenaline, the greater good, protecting others, transferable skills, living the dream and following or breaking a tradition (police one, 2012). “What other career would you have followed if you hadn’t been a police officer'” This would be one question that would be asked but maybe would never get the same answer with all the different backgrounds in America. “How your family is affected by you being a police officer” Stress can cause a multitude of problems in the officer’s professional and social life. Stress can lead to numerous sicknesses and when the officer brings that stress home to his family life it can cause our family to feel negative towards his/her job (Haines, 2003). “What police officers enjoy the most”' Protecting and serving our citizens. “What is it the most challenging thing about being a police officer”' Being constantly criticized for doing your job by people who know absolutely nothing about the job (Darin, 2012). As question is asked, what other job would a police officer consider besides law enforcement' Majority of police officers would rather follow this career than any other career in the world. There are many other questions that could be asked to police officers while in an interview; but the truth is, that they are the most respected people in America because of what they do. When it comes to the distinction in regards to qualitative research versus quantitative research is that qualitative creates a hypothesis and quantitative tests the hypotheses (Hagan, 2010, Ch 1 p.15). Qualitative research, one of the two primary approaches to the conduct of social science research, is a superior means for conducting meaningful research in criminology and criminal justice. The numerous advantages of qualitative methods provide a depth of understanding of crime, criminals and justice system operations and processing that far exceeds that offered by detached, statistical analyses (Richard Tewksbury, 2009, pg 38). Quantitative research is typically considered to be the more “scientific” approach to doing social science. The focus is on using specific definitions and carefully operationalizing what particular concepts and variables mean. Qualitative research methods provide more emphasis on interpretation and providing consumers with complete views, looking at contexts, environmental immersions and a depth of understanding of concepts (Richard Tewksbury, 2009, pg 40). This is the difference between the two types of research in my own words. Qualitative data deals with description and gives information about a specific topic; it can be seen but not measure, for example: appearance, tastes, smell, appearance, colors, etc. Quantitative data, it’s numbers, information that can be measured, for example; cost, humidity, sound levels, ages, height, area, volume, etc.. Only Officers really know why they decided to become police officers. It is know for a fact that family members that has or are still in that field has influenced people to follow the same path as them, but through our own investigation there is evidence that police officers chose their career path on their own. It is also possible that their personal judgment and family members played a role in the choice they made on becoming police officers. As citizens, we hope it is that way. We want our police officers to stand for their beliefs and protect our community, to stand proud for the choices they have made in becoming a member of the law. References: Chris Brower (2009-2012).
