Knowing Your Audience and Communication Release Paper
When communicating information of any sort, it is vital to know who your audience is and ensure you are conveying the message effectively. Dealing with a variety of cultural people in an audience, you will need to take into consideration how you will translate and how the audience will receive the information that is being conveyed. This paper will discuss the protocol on the Chilean Copper Mining accident that occurred on Thursday August 5, 2010. It will be very crucial that the Chilean Copper Mining incident be communicated to the families, employees and community for their state of mind and peace of mind.
On August 5, 2010, the copper mine in the upper northern area of the City of Copiapo, Chile, is where the collapsed cave and 33 miners were trapped according to The New York Times (2010). In the chambers that the minors were trapped under, was in a surface below 2, 300 feet. All 33 miners were trapped underground for approximately two months. The Chilean Copper Mining Company began getting skeptical that there would be any survivors. The company was experiencing many issues to keep family members of the victims reassured, calm, and understanding of the situation. It was also important to keep the employees calm and reassured that the company was using all its resources for a successful rescue of the trapped miners. The Chilean Copper Company had developed an emergency protocol to communicate between employees, family members, and community members in a sensitive way according to Roger, E.M., & Steinfatt, T.M. (1999). This was vital to all the members so that they could receive accurate information on rescuing methods, family, employees’ conditions, and health information on the trapped miners.
These conditions and emotional understanding had affected all employees, families and community members. In this particular case, we are dealing with many family members, community, and people of different background, and different beliefs than our own. It is important that as we continue to assist in giving information that we not further frighten or suggest that victims of the family members might not survive the collapsed copper mine.
The communication strategies to family and community members would be a face-to-face communication. This would require that the company set up a press information system were family and community members are able to receive updates on the trapped miners. This type of strategy and update is an approach to make the Chilean Copper families feel reassured and updated on specific rescue events. The company press information officer would also have to be very informative, and sensitive in addressing the resources to family and community members. In this type of particular setting, the families and community would be given additional resources and updates on how to deal with a major crisis, understanding how to cope with such a tragedy, and offer counseling or religion resources to all family members during the rescue according to Today’s News (2010). They would also be informed of the miner’s condition and health upon determination of any specific signs. This would be an opportunity for the company to reassure family members that they are willing update frequently, and be available to help any family, or community member throughout the recue as much as possible.
The communication strategies that would be conveyed to the company employees would be by memorandum, and e-mail. This type of communication would give the company employees an opportunity to understand that the company’s policy, procedural plan and recue protocol that has been deployed adequately to rescue the miners according to Today’s News
(2010). This memorandum and e-mail would include updates and progress of specific rescue circumstances, procedural methods, implementing the plan, rescue updates, and the progress of any miner’s condition. The additional information would also be address to the company members, and families offering an opportunity to be offered counseling, and religion services for each member of the company, and families as well. Theses services would continue to be offered even after the rescues miners have surfaced according to Metal Bulletin Daily (2010).
In conclusion, it is important on how information is conveyed to a very sensitive issue. It is important that when addressing the audience, that the message is conveyed effectively to the audience in an informative, sensitive and updating manner. This gives the press information officer an opportunity to become very sensitive to the multi cultural environment by offering the reassuring, procedural plans and have an understanding of the deployment procedures. This will also be an opportunity to release any updates on the progress, additional company services and making sure that the audience is receive the information adequately.
