425 Main Street Albany, NY 58274 March 24, 2009 Dear Joe, Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in medieval times' Well I have. That’s why I decided to read the book King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Green. My favorite part of the book is when Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone. Arthur and his cousin go to a knight tournament because his cousin had recently became a knight. The tournament was to find out who would be the new king of Great Britain after the since the untimely death of the previous king had let Britain fall to the ruthless Saxons. The wizard Merlin had said that the person who could remove the sword from the stone in front of the churchyard would be the destined king of Britain. Every knight tried to pull out the sword but none came to avail. So the all went behind the church to have a fun tournament of skill. As they were walking to the tournament Arthur’s cousin realized he left his sword at home. Arthur ran to go get him one when he ran upon the sword in the stone and decided to fetch it for his cousin .he ran to it and picked it up with little struggle. This part of the book is my favorite because it shows that great things can come in small packages, such as Arthur a boy of 16 being crowned king of Britain. The setting of the book is Great Britain in the medieval times (1200 to 1400) and I thought it was really cool to learn about all the castles in Britain. There are a lot of main characters in this book but the two characters I think are the most important are King Arthur a blond haired 16 year old that is brave, courageous but clumsy in a sense throughout the storyline of about 50 years and Sir Lancelot a tall black haired man introduced a quarter of the way through the story when Arthur is about 40. At that time he is in his early 20’s and he’s witty, brave, headstrong and bold. The conflict in the story was when the Saxons (a ruthless kingdom from the north) were taking over Great Britain and leaving its people to rot in the 1300’s or so. It was a pitiful time for the British along with the troubles of the black plague it seemed like the Saxons were unstoppable but the harsh times were beneficiary because the unified Britain as a whole kingdom not a bundle of little ones. The climax of the story was when the Saxons called war upon Britain and attacked King Arthur Directly King Arthur and his knights of the round table met the Saxons and over time they almost completely abolished them. But at a great cost many of the knights had died but piece reigned for a 21 years. Unfortunately the war with the Saxons brought new ideas to Great Britain, which a few people disagreed with. One of them was Mordred who eventually led a rebellion, which started a war against King Arthur and marked his downfall. I recommend you read this book because it’s a thrilling book to read with a lot of intense battles that really put you into the book. I found it very hard to put the book down once I picked up.
