aIntro I have just returned from a three week trip sponsored by a local private philanthropic orginisation. Where did I choose to go' Ethiopia. As I only had three weeks over there, I decided to stay with an Ethiopian family, where I would do what they do everyday, eat what they eat everyday, and sleep where they sleep everynight. A lovely ethiopian family took me to their territory, Abyssinian. Each day I would learn something new, there's just so much to tell. Ethiopia is genereally considered as the indentifiable nation. As I would eat my bread sitting across from the family, I would sit there listening to the fascinating history Ethiopia has gone through. On October 3rd, 1935 Italian troops invaded the independent African nation of Ethiopia. Ethiopia were not prepared for this intruision. The man was telling me that he saw, 100,000 Italian troops in columns creeping into the Abyssianian territory. A-lot of indian doctors were sent to Ethiopia to help provide medical assistance. Why would Italy do this' There are many reasons why Italy invaded Ethiopia. They did it to take over Ethiopia, claim it's glory and have revenge. They would turn Ethiopia into the roman empire or just to have Italian prestige and power. The next day the family took me to a cave. As I would stand there puzzled and confused. They said that, humans inhabitated Ethiopia since the dawn of recorded history as indicated in the early cave drawings. The following days after they took me to a field, where I would stare and see just, nothing. The man of the family cried as he was telling me that due to sevre drought conditions, their vegetables and crops never grew. Not only was their crops suffering but their livestock aswell. Ethiopia has one of the highest unemployment rates. 50% of men aged 15 and 30 were unemployed. I walked around and asked a few ethiopians if they have access to internet. The answered with no and only a few replied yes. 360,000 in the whole of Ethiopia have access to the internet. I asked a few people if they could read. But the reply was mostly no. Around about 50% of males and 35.1% of females can read. The life expectancy of ethiopia is 55. Males, 52.28 and females, 58.39. The population of ethiopia below poverty line is 38.7% A few of the ethiopians that I met during my journey, were different religions. In the whole of Ethiopa, there were 60.8% of Christians, 32.8% Muslim and 4.6% traditional. The population growth is 3.208% which was last recorded in 2009. The current population of Ethiopia is 85,237,338 million, which was recorded this year. As I would help the adults collect water for their families, I asked if they knew the population density. They told me that High Plateu had 70% of the population which is the most out of Ethiopia. The sex ratio at birth is 1.03, under 15 is just 1, 15-64 is 0.96 and 65 and over is 0.75. These are results for both female and male. As I would listen to the different languages, I managed to pick up all the languages I heard. Amarigna, Oromigna, Tirigna, Somaligna, Guragigna, Sidamigna and Hadiyigna. I asked a little girl what language she gets taught at school and she said English. English is a major language taught at schools. Some of the factors causing poverty is absence of sufficient rainfalls. Shortage of food products which leads to several conditions. Under developed communication and transportation systems. Huge rise and falls in agriculture production because of drought. I asked an old man sitting on he's chair. "Do you mind that you live in this condition, do you hate being poor'" He replied saying that he didn't care and that he's still alive that's all that counts. The one main factor is Lack of participation by poor people in decisions that affect their lives. That old man had no confidence, no self esteem, he just didn't care. In conclusion, this three week trip was amazing. Who knew I could learn so much, and experience how the Ethiopians live. As long as their smiling, and their happy, It's all that counts.
