Key Skills Coursework Teacher _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ Buying a new Car After your exploits in the test last week you now have an experience of what the EXAM of Key Skills involves. But, you also have to put together a portfolio / coursework of evidence to show that you meet the criteria that the exam board have put forward. Throughout the lessons, you will learn skills that you can use in your coursework including: - Basic Formula in Excel - Sorting, Filtering - How to present in a consistent way - Advanced searching on the internet - The benefits and limitations of ICT - Short introduction to Access You will all, at some time in the future look to buying a car. However, as some of you are finding out, the costs that are involved in running the vehicle are often a great deal higher than you might expect. In this coursework, you will be investigating and charting the costs of running five cars of your choice to help in deciding which one to go for. Task 1 A front page with your name, school, candidate and centre number and a rough date, eg Jan ’07 to Jun ‘07. Task 2 Create a poster that highlights the dangers involved in using ICT. What are the health dangers' What are the social dangers' You must use the internet (for pictures) and a publishing program for producing the document – either Publisher or PowerPoint. Task 3 Write a paragraph outlining why you are going to investigate the costs of owning a car. Create a bulleted list that includes the information that you will need to collect. (For example, Car Price, Petrol Price, Insurance etc. etc.) Create a second bulleted list that includes initial ideas of where you might get the information from. (For example: the internet, a local paper, a specialist paper') Task 4 What limitations are you going to face when collecting the information and how you might go about making sure that the data is correct. For example, getting two sources of information from the internet. Task 5 Explain the purpose of the coursework and then describe (only about 1 sentence) on each of the criteria that you are going to use to decide your Car. Give each criteria a rating out of 20. Task 6 It is important that you take screen shots of your work along the way. To do this, each new screen that you load, PRESS the PRT SCREEN button and then PASTE it in Word. Then: A) Find the cost of FIVE of your chosen cars through an internet seller B) Find the cost of insurance for your chosen cars through the internet C) How much is a litre of Petrol for your chosen cars' Put at least FIVE screen shots along the way of you carrying out effective searches on the internet. You must cut out adverts for a car from a local newspaper (eg Finchley Times) and paste this on to a sheet of paper. Annotate the key features. Task 7 Which information did you keep and which did you throw away' Keep a record and jot down a paragraph on how and why you did this. Print off information that you decided to keep and which you decided to throw away and indicate on these why you kept it or threw it away. Those that you decided to throw away KEEP, and write on them with a pen why you discarded them. Task 8 Why is it important to treat the internet with caution' Task 9 Combine all of the relevant information together in a spreadsheet using formula to calculate costs. This is one of the KEY AREAS for the work and will help you in your exam. You spreadsheet SHOULD include the following: |Make |Model |Web Link |Engine Size | |Cost |Miles on Clock |Value for money |Insurance Group | |Insurance Cost |Petrol Type |Cost per Litre |Miles per Week | |MPG |Cost of Petrol | | | Make use of all the formula that you have learnt throughout the course Task 10 Get your teacher to sign off that they have seen you complete an ADVANCED search on the Internet. An advanced search involves google and terms like ‘AND’, ‘NOT’ ‘OR’ etc. Task 11 Which car is the cheapest to run' How did you figure this out' Task 12 Copy key sections of the data into Word and annotate where necessary. Task 13 Is there any more information that you need to collect' Explain why either way. Task 14 Take screen shots of any further investigations that take place. Annotate in Pencil of the key features of each grab. Task 15 Start to work on a Poster of your chosen car in Word / PowerPoint or Publisher. It is important to keep presentation to a good standard throughout using pictures of the selected car and any tables / graphs that you have picked. Task 16 Include all the key facts that you have learnt about the car and the costs involved with pictures to aid the presentation side of your work. Task 17 Start to assemble a report on the tasks that you have started so far. Task 18 Use features such as: page layout, margins, headers, footers Task 19 Get your teacher to tick off the following: |Use of screen dumps etc, consistently | | |Use of at least one graph | | |Annotation of images | | |Check your work using appropriate methods | | |Save effectively and correctly, and by asking others for advice | | |Ensure that your work covers all of the important aspect of your work and that you have consistently worked to the required | | |standard | | |That you have decided how best to finish off your work | | |Make sure that your project is error free and state how you did this | | Task 20 E-mail your document through to your teacher and take screen shots – annotate the key features
