English Speech
Good morning/afternoon teachers and students. For my presentation I have chosen to display and explain how distinctive visual texts affect how we see the world and our relationships with others. The following slides consist of images and quotes from our prescribed text Maestro and the well-known Australian poem ‘The Man From Snowy River’ written by Banjo Patterson.
The first section of my presentation is quotes and images from the book Maestro. I have chosen these particular quotes and images because I found they are the most descriptive and interesting parts from the book.
‘’Tattooed on the pale hairless skin of his left forearm, just above the watch line, six faded blue digits.’’ This quote represents the time Keller spent in the concentration camp during the war. The author has described Keller to an extent we can picture an image of him in front of us.
I have chosen the picture of the 6 faded blue digits to represent his time in the camp. The tattoo also represents the pain and suffering he endured during that time in his life and very similar to the tattoo Keller is not only physically though mentally scared for life from his personal experience.
For my second picture a have chosen three hairless kittens. This image is describing Keller’s pale hairless skin. Similar to the cats Keller has no hair and is pale very close to a newborn babies appearance or young child. In the days when Keller was alive, having hair would have shown a sign of masculinity and maturity. This can be seen as the concentration camp stripping him from his masculinity and taken away all his power and authority and showing that the hair has not regrown shows that he is still suffering and feels insecure from his experiences.
The third image I have chosen is Keller’s watch. This picture represents past, present and future in Keller’s life. The positioning of Keller’s watch how it is just below his tattoo shows that every time Keller looks at a watch he is reminded of the time in his camp. This reminder allows Keller to value his time and consider himself lucky how he survived through the concentration camp and has taught him to treasure the present and the past.
‘’At school I was falling in love. Megan's desk stood in front of mine and perhaps it was her back that I first loved; the furred nape of her neck, her smooth shoulders, the thick cumulus of pale hair’’. This quote describes the feeling Paul has for Megan. It is the first time he has felt like this towards a girl and makes her out to be a mature woman. Paul’s language during this quote is nowhere near how a young man would speak about a girl of his own age. Making the whole situation to be something out of a dream very similar to how Paul feels, how it is too good to be true.
The first image I have chosen on this quote is a young male sitting in the back of his class paying no attention to the teacher or his surroundings, very similar to the way Paul blocks out his surrounding and focuses on Megan and especially her back. This image represents Paul fantasying about Megan and how she captures Paul’s full and undivided attention, like the ipod in the image.
The second image is of an attractive young lady and her shoulders exposed. This describes the sexual drive Paul feels from Megan. Being a young boy and seeing a girl with exposed shoulders or skin will automatically grab their attention.
The third image of the love heart represents the love Paul feels for Megan. This part of the quote shows the immaturity of Paul. He is only a young boy and doesn’t know the meaning of love or what it beholds. The quote is showing his feelings in the spur of the moment and how he feels towards the attractive girl sitting in front of him. Also displaying Paul fantising being in love with Megan.
‘’I dropped to my knees, and pressed my head flat to the floor. Peering beneath the bottom shelf I could just make out four feet; one pair shackled together by a pair of denim jeans around their ankles, the other pair in sandals wider apart, a pair of panties lying some distance away’’ This image is describing Paul’s first encounter with adult sex life and his eagerness to find out more and learn from the experience.
The first image I have chosen is a woman in a bed. This is representing the women and her eagerness to participate in the actions described in the quote. Her enthusiasm can also be described by how she has taken no care where she has chucked her underwear or where she partakes the actions and how her sandals are still on making time very valuable.
The second image is describing how the male is a prisoner to the women and her actions. In society men are judged for being more enthusiastic about sexual relations than women. So in the library if the women were eager the man would have been more enthusiastic and done whatever it would take to do the actions described in the quote. Also the pants can be replaced with shackles making the women in full command of the male, similar to a prisoner.
The third image is of a curious baby peeping into the unknown, very similar to Paul and how he is curious and peeping into the unknown and is like a newborn baby to the subject of sex. This quote is also describing Paul’s eagerness to learn how he has his head pressed against the ground and is trying to see more so he can put an image to the sounds he his hearing.
‘’The room was in darkness: the slats of the wooden louvers tightly shut the lights off. A white blur of unmade bed sheets in one corner of my eye and light from the open door glinted here and there, reflected from various bottles on the floor.’’ This quote is describing Keller’s house and how it looks like no one has entered it and he hasn’t left it or let anyone in.
The first image represents the reflection of the empty bottles. The reflection has hidden beauty how the alcohol consumed in it brings wonderful times and memories though can also be dangerous and addictive, similar to the unseen danger in the high mountaintops and its addictive appearance. It shows Keller’s addiction to alcohol and how the emptiness of the bottles displays his feeling of emptiness and loneliness.
The second image is describing how Keller locks himself away from the world in the slats of the wooden lovers tightly shut and in darkness. Very similar to a turtle hiding away from the world and protecting himself from enemies and predators such as the ones who ran the concentration camps.
The third image is very similar to the second, displaying how Keller hides away from his problems and enemies. This image also explains how Keller denies and doesn’t accept he has a drinking problem always avoiding the topic. Also during the book Keller refuses to tell Paul about any personal information, which is an example of Keller hiding from the world and not exposing his true self to people.
‘’Outside the rains were still falling, the air thick and steamy. But from that morning his mood seemed altered, lifted into some zones of clearer, fresher and mental weather.’’ This quote describes the cooling effect of the weather and how it impacts on society not just nature itself.
The first image represents that why his mood may have altered and is much more better now, the aftermath of his bad moods still remain in everybody’s head, making it more noticeable that his mood has changed and has become more soothed, very similar to a cyclone or a natural disaster how it is horrific and then drastically passes and becomes more soothed.
The second image represents his fresh and mental weather. Like he has experienced some relief from the hot humid wether very similar to the image how she has experienced relief through massages and relaxation methods. Showing how people become more relaxed through different situations and events.
The third images represent his drastic change in moods and also the drastic change in the weather. Very similar to the coastal weather which is seen in the picture, peoples mood and tempers can alter to the better or the worse very similar to coastal weather and how its unexpected and unpredictable in certain times of the year.
‘’But the accompanying photographs looked much the same whatever the language, a bleak human landscape located somewhere between tragedy and dumb stupidity’’. This quote represents the immaturity of the subjects in the pictures. While the pictures show their stupidity they also show their courage and determination to achieve the task put ahead of them.
The first image represents the consequence of death and how the subjects in the photo could end up dying in the result of their courage while others may call it stupidity.
The second image is displaying the determination of the subjects and the task ahead of them. It also shows loyalty to the ones who believe in them, such as the soldier is putting his life at risk for this country and showing his loyalty and determination to complete the given task put in front of him.
Section two of the slide show is about the great Australia poem ‘’The Man From Snowy River’ written by Banjo Patterson. I have chose these quotes from the poem because they thoroughly describe the scenery and emotions of the characters.
‘He was hard and tough and wiry - just the sort that won't say die –
There was courage in his quick impatient tread;
And he bore the badge of gameness in his bright and fiery eye,
And the proud and lofty carriage of his head.’
The first image is displaying the courage the horse has and is not afraid of anything that is put in its path, especially not the rough terrain of the mountain slopes. Also his quick and impatient tread is displayed through the men eagerly jumping of the cliff after each other awaiting the ride and exhilaration of the journey very similar to the horse.
The second image is showing the tough and wiry appearance of the horse. While he is not muscle and bulk he will not give up without a fight and will usually come out on top. Such as the prison fence how it is wirey though tough with a soft appearance it will stop the prisoners from escaping similar to how the horse is trying to stop the wild horse escaping into the mountains.
The third image is representing his bright and fiery eye, like he holds magic within his body and can perform greatness. It’s also scary as it displays determination and wickedness and you know you are going to be in for a fight when you look into his eye.
So he went - they found the horses by the big mimosa clump –
They raced away towards the mountain's brow,
And the old man gave his orders; go at them from the jump,
No use to try for fancy riding now.
This quote is displaying the rough and deadly terrain the riders will be encountering and how the team handles the situation.
The first image shows the large mountaintops they will be riding through and how steep and deadly they really are. Also how they race to the mountains brow, once they reach the top there is a whole valley of mountains waiting for them to conquer making the battle and the race tough, enduring and almost never-ending, similar to the mountain range in the picture.
The second image is of an old wise man. This displays how the most educated and noble gives the orders and how the young learning riders listen to him. The old man is automatically in charge when it comes to decision on the ride because of his experience and knowledge such of that as a wise monk or elderly man.
The third image is displaying how fancy riding could lead to injury, very similar to the riding performed in the picture. Its shows how the mountains aren’t suited to inexperienced riders and show offs will be punished by injury. It shows how the riders all have a wide span of knowledge about riding and how to handle themselves and their horse through tough situations. Also shows that technique is more essential than skill.
‘’When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull,
It well might make the boldest hold their breath,
The wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full
Of wombat holes, and any slip was death. ‘’
This image is yet again describing the mountains dangerous terrain and how it terrifies even the best of riders.
The first image is showing how the best are always challenged and there is always something bigger and more powerful you and you must challenge or stand up to in order to achieve your goal. In this case the small dog is Clancy and the giant dogs is the mountain range and its terrain, testing the best in order for them to succeed.
The second image is displaying how one slip could result in death. The bear trap symbolises the wombat holes and emphasis the consequence if they trip or fall over the holes. Very similar to land mines, the soldiers have to make their way through the battlefield without stepping on the mines, exactly like the rider must do with the wombat holes.
The third image represents the overgrown foliage and shrubs and how that stops the riders from seeing the wombat holes. Similar to the train where there are no limits or boundaries on rules or numbers, the foliage has no limits and continues to grow bigger and bigger. Also while more people get on the train the more dangerous it is, like the foliage the more it is the more dangerous the terrain becomes and harder the holes are to see and judge.
‘’And he ran them single-handed till their sides were white with foam.
He followed like a bloodhound on their track,
Till they halted cowed and beaten, then he turned their heads for home,
And alone and unassisted brought them back’’
This quote is describing the exhaustion of the horses and how the are being hunted by the humans and domestic horses and how they have been defeated by a one-man army.
The first image is describing how the man brings back the horses unassisted, similar to an old lady carrying a heavy object; it is hard and difficult though they will succeed if they are determined. It is also similar to a one-man army defeating an empire, similar to Alexander the Great defeated so many countries not single handily though with an amazing individual effort he achieved his goal.
The second image is showing the defeat of the horses and how they have given up. While they will be disappointed and feel broken they now know they are not the best. Exactly like the Russian volleyball team and while they battled hard and fought strong they where still defeated by a better team.
‘’For the Bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stockhorse snuffs the battle with delight.’’
This quote is showing how the riders and their horses love a challenge and a battle for victory, though egotistical about the situation .
The first image is representing how the horses snuff at the battle with delight. Very similar to when in the Brave heart movie how they brown eye their enemies and mock them across from the field. Its also shows their courage and eagerness towards a challenge and the rough terrain. Also while we get an immediate picture of someone being afraid of a challenge this image defines that and makes the characters confident and eager.
The second image is displaying the rider’s love for hard riding. Similar to boot camp and any other sport. The participants work hard and go through grouling training and do it all for the achievement and reward if it’s for the feeling of succeeding or skill development they still enjoy it and benefit from the experience.
‘’And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise
Their torn and rugged battlements on high,
Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze
At midnight in the cold and frosty sky,’’
This quote is showing the riders after their ride, how they are celebrating and happy about the outcome even though they are exhausted and tired.
The first picture is of a soldier after battle and you can see the signs that he is relieved it is over from his facial expressions and how he is smoking a cigarette. The cigarette shows a sign of celebration and how he is exhausted though still excited and relieved his battle is over and he still survives. Similar to the Bushmen.
The second picture is showing children playing in the snow. It’s displaying that they’re so excited and enthusiastic that they are not feeling the cold and they see the fun in the cold weather. Similar to how the soldiers don’t only see the frosty sky they see the clear crystal air and the white stars as well. This outlook could be the result from exhaustion or excitement very similar to the children’s. The image is also showing that your mood and actions can affect your outlook on the current situations and conditions.
In conclusion images described in all different areas of text can be taken in complete different ways to every individual and affects how we see the world and our relationships with others.
