JOSEPH AND HIS COAT OF MANY COLORS Dolly Parton wrote a song about this biblical man, Joseph, and his coat of many colors but who was he' What type of man was he' Joseph’s name means remover or increaser. The bible said he was the eleventh Son of Jacob and Rachel, grandson to Abraham. His siblings thought he was a dreamer and hated him. He represented much more. Genesis 30v23-24,”And she conceived and bare a son; and said, GOD hath taken away my reproach: and she called his name Joseph; and said The Lord shall add to me another son”. The truth is he was more like God in more ways than one. Joseph was obedient and prophetic, virtuous and forgiving. Joseph displayed several occasions when he had dreams that came true, they were visions from God. It was because of these visions that his brothers despised him even more. “His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us' Will you actually rule over us'” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said”, Genesis 37v8. (Salem Communications Network) Joseph showed he was prophetic while continuing his life at a later time. While in prison he displayed his prophetic nature to a baker and a cupbearer. “We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God' Tell me your dreams.” Genesis 40v8 (Salem Communications Network) This scripture acknowledges the likeness and obedience that Joseph showed to God. Joseph was a blessing to his father, who was elderly during his birth. His birth represented a turning point for his father, which was the likely reason he was so favored by him. Joseph continued to be known for his prophetic nature.” Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it."16 "I cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires." Genesis 41v15-16 (Salem Communications Network) Joseph was prophetic in his dreams and Jesus was himself, prophetic. Joseph was like God in many ways, he remained virtuous and resisted temptation, when Potiphar’s wife tempted him to sin. Jesus also distanced himself from temptation by not heeding Satan’s temptation to sin. Joseph’s character showed one of hard work and was rewarded diligently. His blessings he passed on to his family as noted in scripture. The story reflects his dealings with his family as compassionate and forgiving.” Joseph directed his brethren to return and bring Jacob and his family to the land of Egypt, saying, “I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land. Regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land is yours.” Accordingly Jacob and his family, to the number of threescore and ten souls, together with “all that they had,” went down to Egypt. They were settled in the land of Goshen where Joseph met his father, and “fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while”, Genesis 42-46v29. (Salem Communications Network) Joseph deserved his reward of the “coat of many colors” that he received from his father in his youth. That coat was made up of different types of color and material, and was worn by children of Nobles. The coat reflected the character that Joseph wore. He was like God in many ways through his obedience, and prophetic nature. Joseph showed a virtuous and forgiving nature towards his family although his coat was taken, he continued to wear an invisible one as any deserving nobility would. Work Cited inc., d. m. (n.d.).
