Samantha Back 5th hour English September 22, 2010 Reflection on “Waiting on the World to Change” In the song Waiting on the World to Change, John Mayer explains how he is misunderstood by society. He mentions that the world thinks our generation doesn’t and never will stand for anything that we believe. He also says that it’s not that we don’t care; we just know that the fight against the world isn’t fair. He makes it clear that our generation is just “waiting around for the world to change”, but we’re not trying to fix the problem in our society. The importance of this song is to get people to realize that this generation is going to rule the world soon and we need to start acting and stop waiting for everyone else to tell us what to do and how to do it. It pretty much is telling us to stick up for ourselves and do our own thing without worrying about the thought of others. This song tries to tell society that we have more power than we think. John Mayer does a great job of relating this song to all of our lives. He relates it to us by trying to get us to start taking action and changing the world. During my life, I have experienced people being misunderstood and not standing up for themselves. I think that all of us need to have a goal because the world can’t change itself. This song also talks about all of our troops who are at war. John believes that we should bring them all home and allow them to be here with their families. He also says that if we trust our televisions we may not be getting correct information because they can change and bend the words. We need to actually get out there and see what’s going on, not just watch it on T.V. In comparison, what the song means and how it compares to our lives is very similar. Everything that Mayer states in his song can apply to our generation’s lives and can change how we think about our world today. In order for our world to change, we all have to change. When he states that we see what’s going wrong in the world, we just feel like we don’t have what it takes to beat it, I think that it’s very true because I feel like I’m just one person and I can’t do much to change. Also, I feel like people are just waiting for the world to change. It’s not going to happen without us. My message to all of you is to stop waiting and take action! There are so many people in the world that don’t agree with what is going on, so speak your mind. We have the freedom of speech and I think everyone should start using it. Don’t let John Mayer describe you in this song. Get out there and change the world. If one person starts to act, everyone will conform and help out. We do have the power to change.
