Contrast Essay
Comparing Sanger Rainsford from the Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, and Jim Irwin from the Ruum written by Arthur Porges was very simple. Both characters share strong similarities, which bring them both to their positive outcomes in the end of the short stories. They are similar because both stories include two protagonists, playing a cat and mouse game with the antagonists in the story. Their quick thinking (intelligence), bold moves (bravery), and keen eyes (observancy), all help each character overcome their obstacles during the long adventures.
Both characters are definatly intelligent with their professions, and have tonnes of knowledge. Especially when it comes to being in the wilderness, and surviving with hardly any supplies. "Walt Leonard would return on schedule, and it was up to Jim whether or not they lost their stake. If there was any uranium in the valley, he had twenty-one days to find it." Jim Irwin was the right man for the job, this shows his intelligence in his field. Otherwise Walt would not trust him with such an important mission. Rainsford's intelligence is shown by him outsmarting General Zaroff, who is a very experienced hunter on the prowl. "Rainsford!" screamed the general. "How in God's name did you get here'" "Swam." said Rainsford. "I found it quicker than walking through the jungle." Rainsford's clever thinking definatley is a positive aspect in the story.
I think that the characters bravery is the most important trait out of the three I have chosen. Their bravery definatly defines both characters perfectly, and leads them to success in the stories. After defeating the game of General Zaroff, Rainsford shows an act of bravery, challenging the skilled hunter to a sword fight. "Rainsford did not smile. "I am still a beast at bay," he said, in a low, hoarse voice." "Get ready, General Zaroff." Rainsford also shows no intimidation, putting on a straight face and showing his determination of defeating Zaroff. Irwin's acts of bravery are shown throughout the story, "For three weeks he would be isolated in this remote valley of the Canadian Rockies. If, for any reason, the plane failed to return to the icy blue lake, he would surely die." Jim shows bravery even in the beginning of the story. He knows that he could possibly die during his mission, but still follows through and does his duty.
The last trait I have chosen for the two characters is their observant behavior. Being observant for both characters, really benefits them. They discover perfect places for their traps, hiding places, and routes by having a good eye. "Suddenly he came upon a sight that made him pause. It was a point where a huge boulder overhung the trail, and Jim saw pollibilities in the situation." Jim builds a Malay mantrap to help 'save his life'. This is a similar event in the Most Dangerous Game, where Rainsford builds the same trap to help him escape General Zaroff. "The softness of the earth had given him an idea. He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so and, like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig." His quick thinking and observant behavior led him to build another man trap, except this time he catches a hunting dog.
The outcomes of the stories are greatly related to the character's similar traits. If neither of the two men were intelligent, they would have no idea what to do about being stranded in a jungle and the Canadian Rockies. Rainsford would of never defeated Zaroff if he was not brave, because he would not of challenged the General in his own game. Jim's lack of bravery would direct him to not even considering the dangerous task of being alone without food, in a dangerous location. Their observancy really made the difference of their journies. Both characters could spot places to make their man traps, and to help them escape their opponents. Without their intelligence, bravery, and observancy, the two characters would probably not have a great chance for success throughout the stories.
