Surabhi Verma Facts: * Rising Entertainment is a marketing firm, specializing in film and media marketing. * Josh Lewis is a low level marketing associate. * Sarah Bennett is Josh Lewis’ superior and acts as the manager. * Sam Smithstone is the CEO of Rising Entertainment. * Josh is unsatisfied with Sarah Bennett management style. He feels underutilized. * Josh dreams of creating documentaries that offered strong social commentary. * Sarah Bennett is in charge of putting together a successful showcase for Fire Force Five. * Sarah is running on a tight budget after a failed campaign in the past. * Sarah Bennett overlooked Josh’s idea for bringing the Triple-F series online. * Josh met with Sam Smithstone without Sarah’s permission and pitched his idea to the CEO * Sam really liked Josh’s idea and asked him to present his idea at a meeting. Issues in Rising Entertainment: 1. Lacking Trust 2. Time Management 3. Not authoritative boss Issue 1: Lacking Trust Solution 1: Josh and Sarah Bennett need to have more dialogue and communication.Pro: By opening up to each other, Josh and Sarah can learn to work as a team.Con: This may lead to more “sugar-coating” of ideas. | Solution 2: Sarah Bennett has to stop sugar-coating her true feelings towards Josh’s work ethic.Pro: Josh will get a wake-up call and finally start to act like a team member.Con: Josh will get offended by Sarah’s candidness. | Solution 3: Sarah needs to speak with Sam Smithstone, the CEO, since she thinks he doesn’t even know her name.Pro: Sarah will gain more confidence within herself and will build a better relationship with her boss.Con: Sam Smithstone might not be interested in what she has to say. | The Solution I think works best for the issue of “lacking trust” is solution number 3. I think Sarah needs a confidence booster and wants to feel like a important member of the company. By connecting with the CEO and letting her presence be known will definitely be a good thing. By doing so, Sarah won't be so hesitant to talk to Josh and give him constructive criticism so that she’s not always on edge about what he is doing. Issue 2 Time management Solution 1: Company should enforce strict time management rules upon the new employees. Employees, who fail to submit their assignments in a timely manner will have strict actions taken against them or even, get fired.Pro: Employees, such as Josh, who have a tendency to do their work at the last minute, will do their work in time.Con: It may seem like the new employees are treated like they are still in high school. This might also lead to negativity between bosses and subordinates. | Solution 2: The company could offer a time management class during the first week of work to the new employees. Pro: This will help the new employees understand the importance of managing their time at Rising Entertainment.Con: Employees might still choose to submit assignments and work as they please.   | Solution 3: Bosses, such as Sarah Bennett, should not give important work to employees, who fail to manage their time well, for example Josh.Pro: By doing this, Josh will feel that he’s threatened and will work harder to prove his ability to his bosses.Con: There wouldn’t be a point to keep such employees at work, but rather have them fired because they won’t do anyway. | Time management is a crucial issue that the employees suffer with at Rising Entertainment. In order to solve this problem; solution 2 would work the best. By offering the time management class, the new employees will understand that the company stresses time management as a vital component in their employee’s lifestyle. Furthermore, by going through with this class, the new employees will learn easy ways to manage their time. For example, in the case study, “Gen Y in the Workforce,” Josh has trouble handing his assignments on time. Josh’s bad time management leads to trouble for his boss, Sarah. By taking this time management class, Josh will learn how to manage his work and his social life. However, an issue with this solution could be that the new employees might still choose to do work as they please during their time. If this is to happen, they will have strict actions taken against them. It’s company’s duty to teach their employees, but not to treat them like they are in high school. Issue 3 Not Authoritative Bosses Solution 1: Change the CEOPros: The company employees would have a better example follow and will treat the millennial generation fairly.Cons: Changing the CEO will require a lot of time and effort to find another person to take over and there’s no guarantee that the new CEO won’t imply the same policy. | Solution 2: Change the Policy regarding investing time or “sugarcoating”Pros: It will show that the company is very peculiar about the work that needs to be done and the managers won’t have to sugarcoat the truth.Cons: Some people in the company might respond negatively to this change, as they are not used to having a strict and authoritative environment. | Solution 3: Enforcement of employee reviews.Pros: All employees would be reviewed by their bosses and get motivated to work better.Cons: Some new employees will not like the reviews, as they are from generation Y, and find it hard to take in the honest truth. | The issue that Rising Entertainment suffers with severely is the lack of an authoritative boss. In order to fix this issue, the company needs to enforce an employee review policy. In this policy, all employees will be evaluated by their bosses once in two months. This evaluation will not only enforce rules on the employees, but it will also open up the communication pathway between the managers and this subordinates.         Furthermore, this will also give the managers a chance to be honest with the employees and tell them the issues that they need to improve upon. For example, in this case study, Sarah Bennett disliked how Josh managed his time and sent her reports at the last minute. If, she was evaluating him, this is one issue that they can discuss upon.         Moreover, Sarah believed that her boss, Sam Smithstone did not know about her. But if there was an employee review policy; all the bosses will know their workers and it will make the communication between them better. Therefore, enforcing such policy will create an open pathway for discussion of agreements and disagreement. The new employees might not agree with such an honest review, but they will have to abide by the rules. They must know and learn the value of time and respect their bosses’ time. This is why; review policy will work greatly for the company.
