Extension English- Assessment Task 2 Jane Eyre It was a cold, damp evening. I was keen to arrive at Thornfeild hall before night fall. I was on the last few miles home, when suddenly she appeared from nowhere, the horse spooked and I fell. There she was looking meek and frightened. Of course I was annoyed, but also embarrassed that she had caused me to slip. I covered the loss of pride with gruffness. Her attempt to help me, forced me to pity her, she was so sad looking, not pretty but there was something so interesting about her, I just couldn’t take my eyes away from her face. Mrs Fairfax always made such a fuss over me when I arrived home; it irritated me more than ever as my ankle was causing me a great deal of pain. She was also insisting that I meet the new governess. Mrs Fairfax announced her arrival, I barely looked up. That was until I noticed who she was, the strange girl that spooked my horse. I couldn’t believe it, she was Adele’s governess. For once I was interested in the conversation, although she wasn’t as clever as me she kept up well. Surprisingly though she had no tale of wow. The next week or so continued with me attending to business and spending the nights enjoying the company of young Jane. She was desperate to hear the story of how Adele came into my care, I decided I had strung her out long enough and finally gave into her. I woke to the most startling thing that night. Luckily Jane had stirred, as I would hate to think of the consequences if she hadn’t. Bertha had once again tried to end my life. I assisted Jane in extinguishing the remains of the as she had, although it surprised me, take care of much of it. Once the fire was out, my thoughts went to the horrid women and whether she was back in her room. On entering the staircase Grace Poole offered an apology, I didn’t care for it much all I wanted to know was that the mad women was safely locked away. When I reached the door her sickening laughter was clear, she was proud of her attempt, of that I was certain. It wasn’t her so much that I hated, but instead the intentions of my father and brother. As my brother was to inherit my father’s estate they had to find alternate prospects for myself. This led them to Bertha mason, rich, beautiful women. I was young and immature I didn’t realise the situation I had gotten into. It took five years before she succumbed to her illness, but symptoms became evident to me soon after the marriage, especially when I found out about her alcoholic, deranged mother. After she was safely secure I proceeded back to Jane wondering how this was to be explained to her. Luckily Jane was already suspicious of Grace Poole and seemed to believe the story I told her. I thanked her for saving my life and requested for her to not ignore me in the halls anymore. I slept on the library lounge that night and told the servant’s id left my candle alight. I left the next day I had to attend to Blanche Ingram’s party. We had a splendid time but I missed my nights with Jane. We remained there for two weeks before I invited the party back to Thornfeild Hall. At night I requested Janes Company for tea with rest of my party. I observed how she behaved in company, it was what I expected she sat back and listened quietly to that dull Blanche Ingram and her mother Lady Ingram complain about the governess’s they had had. She was evidently upset but I asked her to stay, I gave in though when I noticed tears in her eyes. I bit my tongue when I bid her goodnight, I nearly let more slip than I wanted to when I said “Good-night, my—”. I didn’t want her to learn of my true feelings yet. After a few more days I was sure she thought I was to be betrothed to Blanche. My heart skipped a beat when I heard Mason had arrived, I knew what he wanted but I warned him not to see her without me. Of course did though as I walked in to the library to hear a bloodcurdling scream. I sent everyone back to the rooms telling them that a servant had just had a nightmare. I rushed up to mason finding he had a large wound on his neck and shoulder. The only person I felt I could trust to not gossip was Jane so I went to her room and ask for her assistance. Upon entering the room I asked her if she was afraid of blood, fortunately her answer was no. I left to get a surgeon commanding that Mason and Jane do not speak. I wasn’t surprised by what bertha had done, though I thought she may have some regard for her own brother. I wondered how Jane would cope with the state of affairs and the questions I would soon have to answer. The surgeon and I arrived back at Thornfield Hall and flew silently to the library. Jane had done a worthy job of keeping the blood away, but poor mason was still in a terrible state. The surgeon stitched him up in a hurry and mason was sent away. I took Jane for a walk in the orchard trying to explain my situation to her. She replied to me saying that I should look to god rather than a person. I left her with a question that I’m sure she thought was related to Miss Ingram rather than herself. She left me the next day, on leave to see her dying aunt, although I offered her money she refused it. She was gone for over a month and I began to miss her. After Jane had been back at Thornfield hall for two weeks I took her for a walk around the gardens announcing my decision to ask Miss Ingram to marry me and that I had found of an excellent governess position in Scotland. Jane started sobbing and confessed her love for me. I proposed to her and she accepted. I felt bad about using Blanche to make her jealous as she seemed so upset. Her spirits lifted though as the rains began to pour. He raced to the door and I took the opportunity to kiss her, something I had imagined many times before. The next morning strangely the chestnut tree we had been sitting under had split in half. I noticed Mrs. Fairfax becoming cold towards Jane. I continued organizing wedding preparations showering Jane with jewels and dresses. She rejected them, I didn’t understand why though; I thought that was what all women wanted. I decided that she was just being stubborn. The wedding came quickly; I presented Jane with a lace veil, my wedding gift to her. The night before Jane woke me telling me of her dreams and a strange, savage looking women rustling through her closet and burning her veil. I quickly dismissed both explaining it must have been grace Poole. It was obviously bertha I felt she was sending a warning as she could have easily hurt Jane instead. I requested Jane spend the night with Adele and Sophie. The morning of the wedding I was impatient to get the ceremony underway and the two of us on our honeymoon. Jane was taking her time to get ready when she finally stepped down the stairs I was surprised by how beautiful she looked. We flew down the road to the church and the ceremony commenced immediately. M much to my disgust everything went wrong and Mason and his Lawyer Briggs announced an impediment. I wanted to declare Jane of her innocence and I dragged everyone of to see my apparent wife. Poor little Jane looked shocked but I couldn’t control my anger as I showed everyone bertha, luckily she wasn’t to vicious today. I tried to explain my situation; how I was forced into marrying her and that I felt I deserved some happiness. That night I asked Jane to move with me, but she announced she couldn’t do this without being betrothed to me. The next day she was gone, I searched for her for days wandering about the countryside. My efforts were unsuccessful and I decided to return to Thornfield Hall. After my return one night I woke to the smell of smoke and the glow of the flames. I rushed to save the servants and Adele. Once they were all out safely I ran back in to attempt to rescue Bertha. My attempts were futile as she jumped of the roof while I was making my way up there. I came out of the haze unable to see. I had come close to having two wives, I now had none. The next few months continued on intolerably, they were boring and painful. One night in desperation I held out Jane’s name and swear I heard her reply. Days later she arrived while I was sitting under a tree, I felt her presence around me. At first I thought she was a ghost, but when I realized it was her, it became the most blissful moment of my life.
