Jane Austen, Pride and prejudice
Jane Austen lived between the years of 1775 and 1817 in the south of England. She never left England and lived her entire life alone without ever getting married. All her novels were during her lifetime published anonymously and there for never earned any money nor got recognized by her audience. Two of her most famous works are the novels Pride and prejudice and Emma, which have both been very much appreciated throughout time.
In the abstract from the novel Pride and Prejudice you get introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Bennet two of the main characters in the novel. They are discussing the arrival of Mr. Bingley, a rich bachelor highly interesting since they together have got five unmarried daughters. In the text you get the impression of Mr. Bennet not being as excited to the occasion of the new arrival as his wife. This mainly due to his sarcasm towards his wife (‘how can it affect them'’). You also get to know that Mr. Bennet has another relationship towards his daughter Lizzy compared to the others. (‘They are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters’). The language in the text is relatively old-fashioned although quite easy to understand. Phrases such as ‘a young man of large fortune’ which can be translated to a young and rich man with simple modern English, which according to me is fairly similar. The message of the novel can of course be interpreted differently but I personally believe it is a novel showing strong and independent women which was not very common at this period of time.
Emily Dickinson, I’m nobody! Who are you' and I never …
Emily Dickinson lived between the years of 1830 and 1886 in New England and never got married. Her last 15 years in life was spent in isolation although she used frequent correspondence. Most of her poetry concerned the life she was leading and all the restrictions it concluded. Her father did not like her reading nor writing and therefore the few poems published during her lifetime were published anonymously. The characteristic of her poems is its originality and relatively short structure. The poems created during her life developed with her personality and later poems concerned topics such as religion and immortality.
I never; I personally believe the poem concerns how you sometimes can be certain about how something looks or exists even if you never have experiences it with yourself (‘ I never saw the sea’, ‘I never spoke with god’). The title ‘I never’ is according to me a good title since it creates a further interest as a reader, it triggers on your curiosity towards the text. The author herself might be writing for religious reasons since she mentions ‘I never spoke with God’ and she is therefore either doubting or confirming her beliefs. The language is quite old-fashioned which you can see by observing the word order (‘I never spoke with god’ I’ve never spoken with God)
I’m nobody! Who are you',
I believe the text is relating to the fact that it might not be so good to be in the public and be somebody. This since then people would watch you and you would lose your privacy. The title is (like her other poem) the first line in the poem. This creates a feeling since you repeat the first sentence when reading and the author therefore put emphasis on this particular sentence. I get the impression that the author is addressing someone like her, someone not public knowing how it’s like to be anonymous. She also mentions ‘they’ in the text when writing ‘they will banish us you know’, according to me ‘they’ are the people living in public.
