Israeli and Palestine in Conflict
One of the most controversial and politically sensitive conflicts in the world today is between the state of Israeli and Palestine. While the conflict between these two cultures is relatively short, since Israeli has only been a state since 1947, the history of Israeli and Palestine dates back to the cradle of civilization. The Jewish people have never had land to call their own. Until, the League of Nations in 1920, granted just that. This was however escalated due to the influx of Jewish people from to the homeland from Nazi occupied Europe. After World War II and the Holocaust the Untied Nations approved an area to be shared between Jewish and Arab states, which in turn Israeli declared their independence in 1948. Palestine has always existed, but has been settled by many different cultures. The Palestinian state has been home to everyone from the Phoenicians and Hittites, to the Babylonians and Greeks. More recently Muslim people from all walks of life moving back to their homeland and settling in the Gaza Strip. In 1948 the Arab states rejected the creation of a Israeli state, which spawned the first Arab-Israeli War.
Religion, Economics, and Geography play the biggest roles in the tensions between these two cultures. Palestine made up of mostly Sunni Muslims and Christian peoples. The Israeli states is over 75% Jewish with very low Muslim and Christian populations. With this said, it cause conflict and tension over religious dogma, creating a virtual powder keg of violence. Economics also plays a major role in the conflict. Israeli and the Jewish people have throughout history found way to make ends meet. The Israeli of today has an agricultural system that is completely self-sufficient, due in large part to their ingenious irrigation systems. Not only are they good at producing their nourishment, but they also make electronics, computers, and scientific equipment accounting for over 45.5% of their total exports. Polished diamonds are also a chief product accounting for over 33% of their exports. On the hand you have Palestine which has almost no economy to speak of. This is due mainly to its borders to the north and south being block by Israeli and Egypt. This causes extreme poverty for the people of Palestine and Gaza Strip, which in turn leads to political unrest and ultimately to violence. This is one of the main reasons extremely violent political organizations such as Hamas and the PLO have come to be. The PLO or People Liberation Organization was created in 1964, have served as the main military force for the Palestinian people.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s the PLO have dominated the political landscape for the Palestinians, lead by the likes of Yasser Arafat. Today however Hamas has moved to the front and has dominated the region and its people. Hamas is an Islamic extremists group based out of the Gaza Strip. One of the main reasons for the creation of these extreme terrorist groups is geography. Israeli as continued to take more land, while at the same time choking off the Gaza Strip from the outside world. Since Palestine and Gaza have almost no military to speak of they resort to random rocket attacks and bombings to stike fear into the hearts of the Israeli people. When these terror attacks occur the Israelis retaliate with swift special operations and advanced missile strikes. It would seem that the Israelis have the upper hand. This is not entirely true, Their military can only do so much. A truce is the only way that these two nations will find peace.
The Palestinian and Israeli states in this ever evolving conflict have always wanted peace but have never been able to come to a mutual understanding. This struggle of ideas has a lot to do with the power these two nation hold. With the Palestinians backed by Islamic countries around the world and Israel backed by the United States and other allies. This conflict has political implications that reach well beyond their respective borders. If Palestine and Israel do not find a way to find peace, and this conflict escalates further. Thus spilling over into other countries, then it has the very real possibility of not only changing the Middle East but the entire world.
