It is a fact of life that science and religion will always come into conflict. Is this true'
One of the common debates of the twenty-first century is science versus religion. Science is the systematic way of acquiring knowledge through experiment and observation. Basically, there are three basic philosophy that makes up the core of science, namely, that reality is objective and consistent, humans posses the capacity and capability of explaining reality, and the is a definite answer to all natural phenomena of reality. Religion, on the other hand, includes the narrative, symbolism, beliefs and practices that give the practitioners a certain meaning or faith in life. The never ending debate about this two very broad topic has lead to two extreme sides with one relying only on the reasoning of science and the other completely compelled to their beliefs and faith. The cynics are of the viewpoint that science and religion will always have conflicting viewpoint. I certainly do not share this viewpoint and are of the opinion that science and religion share certain similarities and complement each other at times. Reasoning, history, beliefs and certain concepts of life illustrate the links, similarities and opposing viewpoint between science and religion.
The obvious difference and opposing viewpoints between science and religion is of course their many different beliefs and conflicting notions. The very fundamental opposing viewpoint is the creation of mankind. In the field of biology, the scientist Darwin came up with the Darwinian Theory of Evolution which basically states that evolution is the ever constant growth of species to evolve and change over millions of years. For example, Darwin proposed that human beings were once apes and that we have evolved through millions of years to what we are now. The Darwinian theory of evolution which is widely accepted by scientists around the world does not coincide with the three largest religions in the world- the religions of Abraham, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. While these three main religions have differences of their own, they share a similar tale of the beginning of mankind through Adam and Eve. The creation of mankind is one of the conflicting viewpoints between religion and science but it is not always so.
When looking back to the origins of science and religion, we see many changes that have come along so far. It means that both science and religion are continuously changing with time. For instance, light was regarded as one of the elements of science alongside wind, fire and earth. Then, Isaac Newton proved that light is actually a particle or in other words streams of microscopic balls. The identity of light continued to change till the twentieth century when Thomas Young proved that light is actually light is actually a wave and till Albert Einstein proved that light actually is both particle and wave property. This is also the same for religion. From the ancient Greek to the Roman Empires and till now, we can see the change we humans have made to our beliefs with time. For example, the Roman Emperor Constantine was known to fuse together many different beliefs of his people to guarantee the peace of his empire. This shows that science and religion are continuously evolving and changing. The reasons of science and the beliefs of religion are not absolute and definite yet. Thus, there is no reason as to say that a time may come in the future, when science and religion may not be in conflict with each other.
Ultimately, the one thing that science and religion does not conflict with, is that both science and religion aim to improve the lives of human beings. Both science and religion intends to help us to understand the world better. Although there are people who beliefs in a religion and practices their beliefs without really knowing why, it still boils down to them having faith and improving their life with how they define life and existence themselves. Science helps improve the lives of many people with their technological discoveries. The study of biology and medicine has helped improve the healthcare of us human beings. The discovery of science always aims to give reasoning to certain occurrences and phenomena, while the act of faith in our beliefs does not necessarily have a concrete reasoning into our belief, nevertheless, both science and religion gives us human beings closure and the drive to continue the existence of human beings.
In conclusion, science and religion can come into conflict. However, this is not always so. The very common question of “which came first, the chicken or the egg'” may not yet be answered by science, but many religions beliefs that there is a divine force that makes things in such a way. Through the course of time and the ever new discoveries made thanks to the advancement of science and technology, there is no doubt that the day might come when all the unanswered questions post to religious believers may well be answered by scientists and vice versa. The common thing that religion and science share is that both aim to improve our lives and help us understand the world better.
