Assessment task - SHC 23 Introduction to Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young People’s Settings
TASK-1
Meaning of Diversity:
It means understanding that individuals are different, and recognizing and accepting it. These can include the race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.
Example: The child does not born with the understanding that individuals are unique, so it is very important to be in a diverse group of children to develop this concept from his/her early ages.
Meaning of Equality:
Equality means that everyone is treated equally without discrimination.
Example: Children at home need be treated equally by their parents even when kissed.
Meaning of inclusion:
It means giving all people in the setting equal opportunities to work or participate that may have different needs or experiences so that they can be recognized and appreciated.
Example: a child is fat and other kids make fun of him, the teacher told them story about him when he was a child and how others used to comment on his weight.
Meaning of Discrimination:
To look down on someone because of a certain characteristic, e.g. Gender, race, religion, disabilities, etc. Basically a more natural characteristic that a person possesses.
Example: More than half of the class is boys, teacher like to treat girls nicely and discriminate by making them participate more during the class.
TASK-2
Describe ways in which discrimination may deliberately or inadvertently occur in the work setting.
Deliberately occurred discrimination because the treatment was different among people in the work place because of their gender, age, race, religion etc..
Example: The teacher brought the child that her mom is a friend of her to sit in the front, while another child was returned to the back seat for no reason.
Inadvertently discrimination takes place when a rule or policy that applies equally to everybody is more restrictive for people from a certain group.
Example: If the school only gives information about its policies only in Arabic.
Explain how promoting equality and inclusion reduces the likelihood of discrimination.
When we make sure everyone can be included (such as a school activity) then those children will feel like they are being treated equally and there is less chance of them being discriminated against. If everyone can join in no matter how good they are at something but they have took their chances.
Everyone should therefore have an equal opportunity or equal rights, so that we can all be assessed in the same way, and therefore have the best opportunity to demonstrate our personal, unique, individual and different combination of skills, abilities and outlooks.
Identify a range of sources of information , advice and support about diversity , equality and inclusion
There are many different sources of information that you can use for advice on equality , diversity and inclusion such as managers and senior staff within the setting , the settings policies and procedures on diversity , equality and inclusion , the internet , you could contact outreach agencies , , child line and local services for support etc…
Describe how and when to access information , advice and support about diversity , equality and inclusion
Within the setting you can contact your manager either face to face or via telephone or email for information , advice and support about diversity , equality and inclusion , you can read your policies and procedures which are kept within the setting .
Those information must be memorized and become available at all the times, and when in doubt or disputes they will need to be revisited occasionally and when information, advice or support are needed at work with a child with a disability or one with special educational needs. It is always essential to seek the support and use the experience as a professional development and learning point.
