Interview
Sandra Komm
January 20, 2012
BEH / 225
This is an introduction to the interviewee. He is a male, Caucasian, of 70 years old. He has had a very interesting life, was brought up in a New England, family life style, with two brothers and a sister. He graduated from High School, and went to work at agriculture, farm in New Hampshire. After a few years he received a notice he was to report for the military, so he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He went to Viet Nam after boot camp, volunteered. He and all the ones that volunteered did not know what they were getting into. After a year in Nam, he returned home and was married, still in the Marine Corps, he and his wife started a family. Upon at the time he received orders to return back to Viet Nam, leaving his wife with a new born baby girl. After a few months he was declared missing in action. His wife, was left with a new baby and as many did not know when this conflict happened, the government had passed a law that when a member of the service was missing or presumed dead, all the assets of the serviceman was froze, which in short meant no money coming in for the wives or families.
After over a year he was returned to the states, unknown that he had been listed as missing in action. After that he had one more tour to Viet Nam but nothing out of the ordinary. After he returned they proceeded to have two more kids. He regrets that he spent so much time away from his children leaving his wife to be both mommy and daddy.
The interview
Fred was a very easy person to interview and interesting, as he had been many places and dealt with different people, races, religions, and cultures. He informed me that he really had no prejudices, or hatred for others. The only time in the twenty some years he was in the service was when he was in Viet Nam and he had to kill or be killed. Especially when it came to women and children, the average person has trouble with the men killing children. As he explained to me the Viet Cong would wire bomb to the children so when a service man picked up the children the bomb would explode, killing anyone in the vicinity.
Fred explained that he can absorb things better by reading them, he enjoys going to the library and spending hours going through old books of history for the areas around where he has lived. If he reads about it his memory retains it better than if he sees it. There is a wealth of knowledge Fred, states at the library and no limit as to what you can find, in the tranquility of a library.
Fred had never taken the Myers Briggs test.
He felt that most of his motivation was started when he was in the military. After, over twenty years of military life it is a much regimented way of life. There was no decision as to what you eat or do every day it is all laid out for the military personal.
Working in the nursery business when you and realize the cycle of life was also, in humans as well as plants. Growing something from a seed is a creation. How a simple plant can mean something to a person. He feels he is self monitoring. He looks at all sides of an aspect, people have different views than I do, and some of these views show me a different outlook on the subject.
The trials and tribulations of life, the events of growing up in a very regulatory family. Than serving all the time in the military as well as all the different aspects that are faced in our lives. If we learn from our earlier experiences this is great but if not and we keep making the same mistakes over and over, we really need some therapy. If a military person brings home things in their minds of horror from the conflicts or wars. This is when a military man needs to get professional help. I myself left it in its place mostly, as in that era there was not all the therapy help for a military person.
Raising a family of three daughters trying to lead the down the right path by example as well as instructions. Was another whole different way of life, with the adjustment and trials and tribulations' Than after all the children were gone and married with families of their own. My wife and I decided we needed a change of climate and way of life we had bought land in Missouri years ago. We sold the New York home and started building a cabin for us to live in until we finished our dream home. Everyone says I am a sort of introvert as I like to keep things to myself and talk to myself a lot. Which is one of the things that really bother my wife of 46 years' We have become closer since we have moved and found love again, we have found out things out about ourselves and each other.
This is the last of Fred’s thoughts there has been many aspects of my life I am not too proud of which I have put in the very back of my memory. But when one of them comes creeping up I think of one of my girls, birth or the first time I held them. The day I walked down the aisle at their wedding, first time I held our grandchildren. The day I married my wife; these and many other wonderful memories of my life with the family.
Fred was a very interesting to interview. I could have talked to him for so long but I had taken enough of his time. One thing that stood out on the interview was the fact that he made me aware of how miserably the military personal was treated. I never gave it much thought but in all the wars from the first through the Korean, it was always called a war than Viet Nam was called a conflict and it has been that way every since except the Gulf War ( which he says is a joke ). Every since the Viet Nam Conflict, the government has opened their eyes to the fact that the families need help in these times. As well the troops needing help mentally, physically and other ways after being in circumstances of kill or be killed and watching your soldier buddies be killed or seriously injured. These are some of the pictures of the terrible things these men have to go through and try to forget.
+As the present conflicts are sending troops home the mental doctors have a term for the mental condition that the troops are showing. It is called PTS ( post traumatic Syndrome . It is a shame the factors could not have been recognized during the Viet Nam era when people thought it was drugs and other things except what it really was. Maybe than we would not have had so many soldiers kill themselves or become the wandering homeless that no one gives a care about. There are some of the videos and pictures that may be disturbing to the average person.

My interviewee ( Fred ) was a very intelligent person to talk to and gave me a different outlook on the military problems both physical and mentally. His outlook is put in his words as my final words.
Every since the first war on the shores of New England, to the present day conflicts, there has always been some medical first aid even as antiquated as it was. We have come a long way, but the system of dealing with the mental problems that the military have will never be completed to cover all the mental repressions and conflicts people bring home in their minds and psychological concept, buried so deep they may never know they are there till it is too late.
I thanked Fred for his help and hoped I did not ask too many questions or bring up memories that he had buried deep in his mind.
