Summer Research/ Internship The field of medicine catches my attention, with being able to “hands on” and go in depth with discovering new cures, or figuring how to make a medicine more proficient to cure a disease or treat a average everyday sickness like the Flu . Being able to take on a summer research project, that includes hands on experience with the overall practice of medicine and the process of getting to that point would be an internship I would be interested in pursuing to give me a better understanding of the whole concept of medicine and get a insight look of what’s to come. The program that I have chosen is the SURP program that is at Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences in New York. It consists of being able to interact with individuals in the field of biomedical sciences, giving students the ability to seek research within an exclusive research center prominently to medical sciences. In addition, experiencing the medical field, alongside collages that are well trained in Biochemistry, Cellular and molecular biology and pharmacology just to name a few. Allowing students to be interactive with their individual research projects, of being placed within a high end level of medicine in a hospital, where the present of physicians and doctors are present, giving seminars that pertain to your career into the medical field. Giving you an idea of what is expected in the near future once you are done with undergraduate’s school and go onto the graduate’s school. The admissions process to the summer research program is by implementing to the criteria of having grade point average of 3.4 or better and a full semester of bench laboratory research before you apply for this program. Also it’s essential that you have completed at least two years at a University, as the selection process is competitive as they are going to look at your overall academic record , research that you have done and recommendations from former or present professors ,etc. As your application will be look over by profound Ph. D, MD individuals and students in the major. In addition, there is an essay that is wanted along with your application. In order for myself to be eligible for this summer research project would be to keep up a GPA above 3.4, have experience within a laboratory, by being a lab helper for chemistry or Biology courses, or take on a research project with a professor of the major I’m into, both would give me the insight of what’s to come, when I’m doing an individual study. Also I would have to write a strong essay that would set me apart from the rest of the other applicants applying for the same program. The financial aspect of paying for this summer research program would include getting a small part-time job that would help pay for the program itself, but finding a job up there to help pay for basic needs, like food ,housing, etc. In addition, with the help of my parents also that would pitch in to help me pay for the program too, but most of the money would be coming from me. I would also apply for scholarships that could help with the remaining amount I need in order to fully be in the research program full- time. As the cost of traveling expensive do add up and so does the amount of housing and additional items I would need in the course of this program. Being able to participate into a research program like this would be a great experience for me to do my second year of in college. For it would give me a sense of what is in store for me once I graduate and go on to graduates school. In addition, with doing this research program I would have connections with well profound doctors and mentors that could help me into the right direction in order to be successful in what I want to do in the future. Also, it would show me the extensive process, of how medicine is examined under the site of a laboratory. Therefore, being accepted into this summer research program would give me the advantage amongst other students that are applying to med school the same year as I am.
