LIBYA Col Muammar Gaddafi was singled out by MI5 as the greatest state sponsored terror threat of the 1980’s.Flushed with oil and money he unleashed a fresh range of firepower. The crisis in Libya started when Tunisia and Egypt underwent a massive unrest in their country. The Tunisian authorities in the region tried every means possible to prevent the flow of videos after Public anger had been sparked by the suicide of a young, unemployed man, Mohamed Bouazizi, who set fire to himself on 17 December after officials had blocked his attempts to make a living selling vegetables The capital city of Cairo was described as a war zone and the port city of Suez was the scene of frequent violent clashes. The government enforced a curfew that protesters defied and that the police and military did not enforce. The presence of Egypt's Central Security Forces police, loyal to Mubarak, was gradually replaced by largely restrained military troops. With his regime on the top list, Col Muammar Gaddafi’s forty one year old authoritarian rule hanged out in the balance today. For these many years in power since 1969, Col Gaddafi is the longest-serving ruler in Africa and the Middle East, and also one of the most autocratic rulers. The Libyan authorities have reacted fiercely to the outbreak of protests and the unrest in the country, which have come amid anti-government unrest in many other countries in the region. Many Libyan diplomats, including the country's ambassador to the US, have turned their backs on Col Gaddafi and are urging the international community to take action. They have urged the UN to impose a no-fly zone over the country in protest. Interior Minister Abdel Fattah Younes al-Abidi has resigned and joined people to fight against Gaddafi and bring peace to the country. Amidst all these situations arising and the West intervention Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has refused to stand down amid widespread anti-government protests which he said had tarnished the image of the country. British, French and US military aircraft are preparing to protect the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi after the United Nations Security Council voted in favour of a no-fly zone and air strikes against Muammar Gaddafi's forces. The United States finally joined Britain and France in supporting a draft resolution imposing a no fly zone over Libya Ten of the council's fifteen members voted in favour of the resolution, while Russia, China, Germany, India and Brazil abstained.  China and Russia declared that it will not take part in the military action, while it is taking a lead in calling for stronger economic and other sanctions against the Gaddafi regime. They voted in favour of sanctions on Libya but did not block the resolution on a no-fly zone because it took into consideration the positions of Arab countries and the African Union. The action announced United Nations Resolution which authorized a no fly zone and all necessary measures to protect the rebel city Benghazi and other towns from being captured by Gaddafi’s troops. America's military intervention in Libya will extend the civil war and increases the number of people harmed or killed, relative to a no-intervention baseline, are not reducing.  This was the first time the world has pursued humanitarian intervention so boldly since the Rwanda genocide.U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, which authorizes international intervention into Libya to protect civilians, is still historic. The goal of liberal internationalist is inclined towards promoting a liberal world order. The resolution calls for "all necessary measures to protect civilians under threat of attack in the country. Addressing the country, U.S. President Barack Obama also explained his position largely in humanitarian terms: If the world failed to intervene, he said, "The democratic values that we stand for would be overrun. Moreover, the words of the international community would be rendered hollow."  In response to a call for action by the Libyan people and the Arab League, the U.N. Security Council passed a strong resolution that demands an end to the violence against citizens.  It authorizes the use of force with an explicit commitment to pursue all necessary measures to stop the killing, to include the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya. The coalition forces first enforced the UN-authorized no-fly zone over Libya, but then expanded their strikes. And now the command of the military operation is transferred to NATO. The West-led coalition is quick in carrying out military actions, which have gone beyond the UN resolution. There is a grave danger that the intervention might end up in dividing Libya, which might see a long period of conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan. What the world actually witnessed was mainly something other than an effort to protect Libyan civilians. It was rather a an illegal attempt to turn the tide of the conflict in favour of the rebellious campaign by destroying as many of the military assets possessed by Libya's armed forces. Though there were assistance from the wests, Arab countries but if we see in depth the losses of the civilians in Libya did created a huge impact in the country itself raising it to civil war, refugee problems, mass number of Libyans fleeing the country etc. The United States entered its third war in the Middle East with missile attacks on Libyan government air-defense and communications centres. But a difference from the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq was that this one lacked the militarist bombast that President George W. Bush relished. President Barack Obama took a low-key approach, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton making the unusual point that the United States would not be in the lead on this conflict, leaving that to France and Great Britain with some symbolic support from Arab monarchies. Mr Obama authorised covert CIA operations in Libya sometime in the past few weeks. This suggests a level of American involvement beyond airstrikes for civilian protection, and enlivens the fear that America may well get sucked into another full-blown war.
