Innovation, design, and creativity is consider to be the secret of success and the foundation of what keeps organization competitive as well as in business through the changing times. Organizations are now looking toward a culture of creativity that motivates employees and encourage them to step up and assist in developing methods that align with two organizational objectives, team environment and productivity. Before an organization can begin to use innovation, design, and creativity as part of their plan, they must first understand what they mean and know the difference between them. In this paper I will compare and contrast innovation, design, and creativity, defining their terms and discussing their business implications.
Innovation is considered to be a new idea plus implementation. Creativity is the idea that is laterally thought of and is later used in innovation. Design is the outcome or implementation also known as the conscious part of the innovative process (Von Stamm, 2003). Defining all three is considered to be easier than trying to compare and contrast the three elements because of how they intertwine and the role that each plays in achieving the desire outcome. When looking to see how they compare, innovation is depended on the creativity process and both are needed in the design process. Creativity and innovation are considered to be similar because they both introduce an idea, while innovation and design produce an outcome of something new. All three elements can be contrasted as well. Creativity is considered to be the foundation for both innovation and design, however though creativity and innovation is a detailed process, creativity is no longer needed once the idea has been brought into play. Design and innovation also can differ from each other, first because innovation is the new idea and design is the implementation process and the second reason is because design can also take existing material and alter it.
Innovation, design, and creativity are all very crucial elements for organizations looking to gain a competitive advantage over their competitors. By creating an organizational culture that encourages creativity from all level of employees and reduces challenges that may prohibit participation. Employees that share the same common goal as the organization will assist in making the business successful.
