Information Systems and Software Applications University of Phoenix BIS 219 September 11, 2010 Various Software Applications within Organizational Departments In today’s changing business climate, software applications (SA) and information systems (IS) are changing the way both small and large companies are doing business. The way information resources within these business’ are more advanced and intricate, and the growth of many companies has called for the use of SA and IS or CBIS to integrate the various departments. Such departments as accounting, marketing, management, and human resources are using these SA and IS to enhance the way the company operates, plans, organizes, produces, and manages all aspects within the organization. Accounting Software Applications The accounting department within an organization may use many varying SA or CBIS that either is streamlined for their company or basic applications that meet the small needs of that business. Such SA’s as the “Enterprise Resource Planning” This is a system that allows all the departments (accounting, planning, marketing, and sales can all be covered relating to the accounting of each department (ERP Accounting Software-Is It for My Business/, 2010, ¶ 2). This enables management to quickly locate all accounts receivable, payable, inventories, and other financial sources and means within the business (ERP Accounting Software-Is It for My Business', 2010). The “Sage MAS 500” made by Microsoft® enables accounting departments to manage more than one currency, consolidations and allocations, as well as accounts payable and receivable (ERP Accounting Software-Is It For My Business', 2010, ¶ 3). In the accounting department the need for these SA provides business’ the ability to control large or small companies various inflow and outflow of capital; this while cutting back on time, and being more efficient and less labor intensive. This in-turn allows companies to save on time and money; two aspects that all business’ seek. Human Resource Software Applications Like the accounting department the HR department relies on various applications that enable the cutback on labor and increase the return-on-investment. Such SA as the “Self-service” HR application allows for both aspects that the HR departments are tasked with. The application benefits the department in cost savings, regulation compliance, efficiency, and legal-exposure management (Human Resources: A Self-Service Application, 2010, ¶ 5). Additionally, business’ that use this SA enable employees to view all compensation, leave one may have, request of time off, and make any changes to personal or other information within the company. This in-turn allows the HR department to focus on more of the administrative duties and tasks related to the department; this rather than spend time answering and reviewing employee documentation (Human Resources: A Self-Service Application, 2010, ¶ 5). Marketing Software Applications Today’s marketing department is more valuable than ever. This department is responsible for company awareness within the specified market and location (Task Management Software for Group Collaboration, 2010, ¶ 2). The collaboration of all departments with the marketing department is one key element that is responsible for growth and profit within the sales and marketing of the company. For this reason many companies rely on such SA as “VIP Task Manager.” This software allows the management of the department to easily control the tasks, responsibilities, and duties related to the products and services within the company and market. Additionally, the software allows for workflow supervision and collaboration through all the various departments (Task Management Software for Group Collaboration, 2010). This enables for time efficiency and cost savings through project management and collaboration. No matter what department a business needs is SA is altering the way companies run internally. In all departments of the organization IS and SA are allowing for increased productivity, time efficiency, cost savings, extended collaborations, and greater multi-tasking with less labor force. These various applications and systems are integrating companies worldwide; thus enabling the consumer in the end to benefit with cheaper products and services.
