INFORMATION RESOURCES In this paper I will define information resources, and give the 3 different types. We will discuss application soft ware, and give examples. Will give 3 departments within a company, and define each of them. The departments are: accounting, HR (human resources) and management. Then give an example of what some of their task are at my job working at McDonald’s. What are information resources' Information resources: (1) the data and information assets of an organization, department or unit. (2) Another name for the Information Systems (IS) or Information Technology (IT) department. (Farlex, Inc., 2010) One of the primary goals of information systems is to economically process data into information and knowledge. There are 3 main types of information systems: Data, Information, and Knowledge. DATA ITEMS refer to an elementary description of things, events, activities, and transactions that are recorded, classified, and stored but are not organized to convey any specific meaning. Data items can be numbers, letters, figures, sounds, or images. INFORMATION: refers to data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient. KNOWLEDGE: consists of data and/or information that have been organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning, and expertise as they apply to a current business problem. (Turban & Rainer, 2008) Application software is a subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities, but does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. Examples: desk top, media player, spread sheet, word processor. (Application software - Definition, 2010) Accounting is defined as the bookkeeping methods involved in making a financial record of business transactions and in the preparation of statements concerning the assets, liabilities, and operating results of a business. (Accounting, 2010) Example, the individuals who do the accounting at McDonald’s is a two step process. The individual stores, at the end of each shift, are required to count all money from the registers, which is the manager in charge of the shift and log it into the pc. So that it can be sent to the main office. The main accounts can keep track of the businesses profits and losses. They also keep track of the number of hours that each employee works. Then employee’s can be paid. HR is an acronym for human resources, that element within a company which deals with the human aspects/needs of workers. The HR department is there to help the employee’s. They can hire and fire an employee also. (Conjecture Corporation, 2010) The HR department at my job: hears complaint of sexual harassment, employment pay questions, employment complaints, questions about insurance, and 401 K. Management: the act or manner of managing; handling, direction, or control. Skill in managing; executive ability: great management and tact. The person or persons controlling and directing the affairs of a business, institution, etc. The store is under new management. (Management, 2010) The management department in a business assigns the employee’s their jobs. For example, at McDonalds, the GM (general manager) assigns jobs to the lower management. (Shift managers) Then the shift managers assign task to the employee’s. There are employee’s who work the front registers, they take orders from the customers. Then there are the individuals who take orders from the drive through. We have a person who is in charge for drinks, fries, burgers, dishes, and then there is someone who is in charge of keeping the place clean. Each employee is assigned their task once they have clocked in for their shift. In conclusion to run a business there is a lot that goes into it. When we go in to order a cheese burger, and fries, we don’t think of all that goes into getting to that point. The reason I chose to discuss: accounting, HR (human resources), management, because it is an area that has always fascinated me. I am considering opening my own business once I graduate. To me these are the 3 most important area’s in a business. All the advertisement want matter if, the account, the HR, and management, is not working properly.
