Information Systems and Software Applications Anna Saenz BIS/219 11/29/2010 Information Systems and Software Applications Information systems and software applications are available for many organizational departments within a company such as the marketing, accounting, and human resources. Each department within an organization plays an important role in maintaining the organization moving. Marketing Marketing is involved with the development of goods and services in the economy, as well as the distribution of these industrial and consumer goods. (Sultan Qaboos University, 2010). Marketing organizations work analyzing markets and customers, producing offers and promotions to the target markets, and planning the money and time to increase the sales of products and services. (Unica Corporation, 2009). Software Applications Marketing For analyzing there is the presentation software; document software, spreadsheet, business intelligence and reporting software, order management and price optimization software, marketing database management software, and consumer relationship management software. For planning: spreadsheet, document, and e-mail software is often used to communicate and work on marketing plans and budgets. For producing: graphic, photo, illustration, video, audio, text, and web-page editing software. Project calendars, planning, and tracking software. (Unica Corporation, 2009). Types of marketing software The different types of software used by marketers can be categorized into groups. Productivity and Collaboration: Includes spreadsheet and document software as well as FPT sites (File Transfer Protocol), document proofing, and online mark-up systems. Business Applications: Relationship Marketing Databases, Call center Software, Point of Sale Systems, Customer Relationship Management Systems, and Business Intelligence Suites. Design and Production Tools: Video and audio editing, graphic design and document software. (Unica Corporation, 2009). According to Unica Corporation (2009), within companies, many departments use software to help run their business operations and help them measure and improve the productivity of their departments. (Marketing Software, para.2). Accounting Accounting is an information system which measures, processes, and communicates financial information about economic entity. (Sultan Qaboos University, 2009). Accounting software is used for different aspects of the business and the home. Software Application In the business accounting software is used to help with payroll processing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Accounting software provides business with the tools to adjust business processes, make transactions manageable, and improve employee efficiency. (TuteBox, 2009). Accounting information helps every department in an organization and use of accounting information. (TuteBox, 2009). According to TuteBox (2009), accounting information such as sales amount and profit made helps to evaluate the performance of the sales department. Necessary cost and sales information can be obtained from financial accounting system. (Accounting, para.1). Types of Accounting Software Expense Report Software, Budgeting Software, Tax Software, and Check writing Software as well as Database Software, Auditing Software, Bookkeeping Software, Payroll Software, and Bank Reconciliation Software. Before accounting software, these tasks had to be performed by hand, using larger transaction journals. Accounting software automates these tasks, reducing the cost of accounting and allowing better decision making. (Investopedia ULC, 2010). Human Resources According to Heathfield (2010), the Human Resource Department is in charge of organizing people, reporting relationships, and work in a way that best supports the organization’s goals. (The Human Resource Department, para. 1). Human Resource Department is devoted to provide effective policies, procedures, and guidelines within a company. (Heathfield, 2010). Software Applications Currently Human Resource Management Systems includes: payroll, work time, benefits administration, recruiting, and training. (Reh, 2010). According to About.com, Inc. (2010), a Human Resource Information System keeps track of all employees and information about them. It is usually done in a data base. These systems include the employee’s name and contact information. (Management, para.1). Types of Human Resources Software Some systems track applicants before they become employees. They are also known as HRIS, HRMS (Human Resource Management System). An organization’s Human Resource Department use information systems and software applications to increase the company’s customer base and organization. (Reh, 2010). In today’s advance technology world, it is highly recommended to know about the importance of the various software and application for the different organizational departments.
