I have learned a great deal of new things since my short time at University of Phoenix, between orientation and my first semester classes. The most important thing I have learned for excelling at being a University of Phoenix student is to practice academic honesty. I have learned that it is best to use my own words and phrases, rather than plagiarize. Honesty is the best policy; keeping up with the academic honesty will keep me on track and reduce the risks of being exposed to plagiarism or copying other’s work. Being in a distance learning environment will also help me become more dependable on myself. Using the Center of Writing Excellence (CWE), https://ecampus.phoenix.edu/classroom/ic/cwe/home.aspx, I am able to use the Plagiarism Checker as well as WritePoint to help me feel confident in my work. Having these sources to help throughout my entire student career with University of Phoenix will help me significantly. I believe another educational resource that will aid me notably would be having my academic counselor available to me at any time throughout my time with University of Phoenix. Moreover, having the University Library; Article Databases-Major, and Article Databases-Specialized, http://www.apollolibrary.com/Library/Library.aspx, will be a great deal of help when I need to do research on a specific or general subject or topic. Having access to these resources will more than likely help more than going to google.com and having to do research from there, and there is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to doing research on a search site. When I set up my goals, I made it to where they are achievable and easy to follow for myself. One of the goals I set up was to complete and obtain an Associate’s in Information Technology. I made this specific goal work in my favor to where I only focus on that week of the course and make sure that I complete every single assignment on time. The participation assignments are another thing that I try to do best with completing week after week of the course I am taking at that time. These goals will help me in achieving my ultimate goal of obtaining a career to provide for my family. Being able to complete these things will help me teach my children that not only can they do anything they want to with their lives, but that is will also benefit them throughout their lives to understand this point and continue their lives believing this. I have learned over the course of time here at University of Phoenix that time management is really important and it is something that I should not let get out of hand or lose sight of. Managing my time wisely plays a big part with my stress level. If I do not manage my time sensibly, then I get behind on the work and, in turn, my stress level goes up. I believe committing time that is to only be used for school work is a big part of helping with managing my time. Making sure that I can have time alone with my thoughts and my work will ensure for a better understanding of all work and progress made. The Reading Comprehension and Retention portion of the course has helped me understand how to read articles and how I can retain the information I have just read. I have noticed that I have a tendency to just skim through the readings and that causes me to forget easily what I’ve just read. Although it does take me longer to read, I have started to read slower and to re-read whatever sentence or paragraph if I do not understand it. I also will take notes of things I do not fully understand so that I can take time to research into that subject. Learning how to utilize the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) is something I have found to be valuable in helping with my reading comprehension and retention. Over the course of time, I am sure I can improve my reading style and my ability to be able to retain more information. There is always room for improvement in one’s life, and I am glad that I have found areas that need improving that are directly beneficial to my life at the present time. My personality and learning style is Bodily-Kinesthetic, which is where I learn best by doing things in a hands-on fashion. Once I completed the required quizzes and found out that my learning style was Bodily-Kinesthetic, my first thought was “that’s exactly right”. Because I have always been a hands-on kind of person, I now know to also apply this to my academics. Being hands-on is the reason I absolutely enjoy doing carpentry and building things. A few areas that I know will benefit me by improving those areas are Interpersonal, Visual-Spatial, and Verbal-Linguistic. Since I will be working with people once I get into the Information Technology career, it would serve me best to learn how to communicate with others and how to explain things. As of right now, if I had to explain to someone about how to bridge a connection or if I had to explain to someone over the phone about how to find a program or hooking up the internet, I would fail miserably at that. I do my best explaining to people by doing; showing them how to get to a specific program, hooking up the internet, or bridging a connection. Visual-Spatial is something that I can always utilize, whether it’s within the carpentry career or information technology career. In addition to Visual-Spatial, Interpersonal is another thing I will always utilize throughout my career(s). Being able to communicate with others will improve our relationships and help keep that communication line open. I need to be able to understand what the client wants from me, whether it is a problem with their computer(s) or internet, or finding a computer that’s the right fit for them. My personality has always been very determined and head-strong. When I have my sights set on something in particular, I do whatever is in my power to obtain anything that I may desire. These attributes will be very beneficial to me over the course of time I spend with University of Phoenix, and any other colleges or careers that may be in my future.
