Inequalities

outline some of the inequalities on the street which you know. Inequality refers to a situation in which individual groups in a society do no have equal social status social class , social circle and also refers to freedom of speech ,property , access to education , health care ,quality housing, transport and social goods and services. What I have learnt from studying this module about the city roads and inequalities, things are not as the same they appear at the first glance. There is a street in my area close to where I live that has many similarities to City Road, Many of the things there I would not have noticed. This module has helped me to connect to people and the aspect to see things differently creating equality and inequalities. The inequalities that can be seen when you drive or walk through City Road or even Simon Bromley said(Learning companion 1, pg 25) That City Roads are unique , much of what we can see and applied to almost any street. I know understand how materiel’s things are and have a great impact on different areas in our social lives such as gender, class, age, ethnicity and country. The street I have choosing and been observing to talk about is London Road. It has some similarities to city road. It is a multicultural and diverse area and its home to many diverse communities. It is also a very busy streets and a long one. It has a lot of different shops, restaurants comprising of residential flats and house with small business, hospital that serves the main community and it’s near the Croydon shopping centre, you can see how busy that road would be. Many of the shops on this street are food stuffs shops, selling all kinds of food stuffs to different kinds of people from different countries mainly Africa’s and the carbines .There are lots of cheap items that are sold by this shops . o. Most of the items sold on this street are from Africa and this is creating unequal access to other people living in the area. For example there is a restaurant called Baba run by Africans. On their menu , you will a selection of Africa and English dishes alought is a Africa Community , there is a British identity present. This is just one of the inequalities of London Road. The second inequality that I have seen on London Road is the conflict between traffic using the street for parking .There is a pay and display at the back of the train station and also both sides of the road and in two car parks at either end of the street. In order to control traffic and encourage fair usage of the road, several methods are used including maximum staying times for parking; periods when no parking is allowed and loading bay for delivery vehicles. These rules are enforced by a traffic wardens employ by the council to dispense fines on vehicle that misuses the bars. Upon all these regulations, travelling on the high road is still often delayed by vehicles that are parking at the side of the road. It has been said by attempting to maximise the number of people that can access the high street shops, traffic using the London Road is a through inequality. Other traffic is motorist and the pedestrians .The numerous controlled crossing s, although help pedestrians access their destination, in turn has effect for vehicles accumulating traffic and increases social disorder between vehicles and the pedestrians as they fight for space among the road. Contrasting in comparison is that city City Road has developed a better infrastructure for meeting the demand of both vehicles and pedestrians with the community. This inequality in traffic flow differs from he City Road which as described by Dr Simon Bromley, also has heavy traffic but it mainly flows along the road with very little traffic stopping park(Material Lives 2009 Scene 2). In contrast to London Road City Road limits on- street parking with bollards which assist with traffic flow but may impede drivers’ access to its facilities. (Rodney Burman, Material Lives, 2009, scene 1) The most visible being the traffic islands; “the purpose of that is to make it easier for people to cross the road” . Rodney also explain how there are plenty of crossing points for pedestrians but that too many controlled crosiings impact traffic,
