Imperialism

Imperialism is when a stronger country dominates a weaker country. Imperialism brought many positive and negative effect for both India and the British colonizers. India suffered with starvation but they also progressed in trading and growth of ideas with the help of the British colonizers. British people gained a lot of profit from india but later india turned their back on British because everything was given to them. Imperialism is when a stronger country dominates a weaker country. British ruled South Asia from 1858 to 1947 which is commonly known as India. The causes for India control were that British wanted power. India did not have a strong military and british people took the opportunity to imperialize. British used old imperialism, instead of just taking power over India, they created trade routes to trade merchandise with India. British established a company for trading. The British saw that india had a population of over 300 million and used them to produce profit from cheap labor. These companies used indian’s natural resources to produce materials and sell them back to india. In 1947 British rule ended with peaceful protesting. India had many positive effects from the British colonizers. These benefits includes the building of roads, canals, railways, and telegraphs. These advancements allowed India to expand their trading and grow a more successful market. Since India was not a very educated society, the british shared knowledgeable information with India(Document#1). “ They can also give these people the benefits of other blessing of civilization which they have not the means of creating themselves”(Doc.1). Even though India received many positive effects from the British, they also received negative effects. Document 2 states that British people dint allow any Indian to participate in the departments in which they established.”Natives, no matter how fit, are deliberately kept out of the social institutions started by Europeans (Doc.2). Ones the british had gain all the profit from the indians, they traveled back to British with all their gainings. Document 3 also states that the British people also established wise laws and courts of justice.” they have built an administration that is strong and efficient”(Doc.3) The British people gained a lot of positive effects. British people took power over india, they used their land to cultivate and produce products for their own benefits while the Indians didn’t get mush.The British people used divide and conquer to expand their territory in India. British people basically lived from India’s resources and valuable products states document 2. “ The british occupy almost all the higher places in every department of government”(Doc.2). British gained a lot of profit but they also were affected in many negative ways. India after a while didn’t like the idea of being given everything by the British. Later on India wanted to take power by their own hands states document 7. “ You have given u no responsibility for our own government”( Doc.7). India later said that the British have committed the crime of not allowing them to grow by themselves. All the knowledgeable ideas and laws were offered by the British without the consent of the Indian people. The British colonizers and India’s colonies both received positive and negative effects from imperialism. Even thought imperialism brings many positive effects toward the colonizers, many countries today don’t use imperialism because it’s always bounds toward bringing many negative effects. J.C 93
