Impact of Technology Amy Morrison Ashford University BUS 375 Employee Training Instructor: Eboni Lamar August 15, 2011 If there is one thing that can and will make a huge impact on an organization, it is the prologue of new technology. Introducing technology can amplify good organization and make their job easier to do as well as sometimes more pleasurable. In this paper different characteristics of technology introduction into an organization will be observed as well as the necessary steps that are taken to ensure an impact that will be effective, as well as support if there are technical problems. The growth and development of communications has changed the way individuals interact. This interaction has also joined many where communication was once thought impossible or too time-consuming. Communication has become global. Through the use of email, text messages, and desktop messages it has become possible to perform tasks and manage without ever being face-to-face with another person (see Reinard, 2007) The world of technology is undoubtedly changing very fast and every day. It has become involves or even attaches to our everyday life. Most of the times, technology are useful; it allows us to do things faster, better, and differently from the way our parent did ten years ago. However, everything in life seemed to have a bad thing attached to it. Every day it becomes more obvious that people use technology as a short cut to their every task, especially in the world of communication. Such as Email, Instant Messages, and Cell phone texting are dangerously rising, which can cause a fatal impact on our rich and brilliant English language. Ten years ago most of us would have to pick up a pen and paper to write a letter to our friends who are in a far-away place. Sometimes it would take up days or weeks for a letter to arrives, and sometimes the letter would get lost along the way, especially for the international mailing The average U.S. employee with Net access spends 90 minutes each day visiting sites unrelated to his/her job. Recent estimates indicate that 30 to 40 percent of lost worker productivity is due solely to cyber loafing, and this cyber loafing is costing U.S. employers alone $54 billion a year." Supervisors are directly responsible for these employees. For this reason, computer technology has had its greatest impact on this level of management. The question that persists is how to deal the problem. Should you strictly enforce rules regarding the Internet' That option is available but with no clear legislation on employee rights regarding privacy on the Internet at work management is taking a huge risk. Many companies are engaging in an activity known as "internet time" giving employees an allowable timeframe to pursue their Internet activities. The plain truth is that preventing Internet use on the job is nearly impossible yet management needs a way to govern it and the idea of internet time seems logical. From the employee perspective should you be disciplined enough the limit use on your own' An employee is obviously risking a lack of promotion, an impact on salary, and even possible termination if their use of the Internet affects their job performance (see Reinard, 2007) In online learning it is possible to enable learners to interact with the training content and other learners and to decide how they want to learn. Here are some possible features that can be built into online learning: (1) Practice, feedback, objectives assessment, and other positive features of a learning environment can be built in the program. (2) Learning is enhanced through use of multiple media (sound, text, video, graphic) and trainee interaction. (3) Training can be delivered faster and to more employees in a shorter period of time (see Noe , 2010 pp 306-307) Some companies have training requirements that all employees have to complete for the company to meet quality or legal requirements. Online learning allows more employees to gain access to these types of programs in a quicker time period than face-to-face instruction is used (see Noe , 2010 pp 308) Simply the communication channels widened enormously, and the information exchange has became extensively faster and broader, abridge several steps with regards to purchasing, and also enhancing the fast decision making. Also the quality has enhanced, costs have been reduced, and speed has increased. Many communication channels are available like Internet, email, telephone, mobile communications, fax, video conference calls, GPS, etc. business is now using all this new technology. As far as the technology keeps on changing, the internet become widely used and everyone is able to gain an access to it, email provides a great solution for a long and time consuming letter. Writing and sending email provides us a much faster in the matter of seconds and cheaper way to converse. However, when we are writing in the email form, we tend to forget the rules of verbal communication which had been set for hundreds of years. For example, misspelling, and punctuation errors are the most common mistake people made in emails. But that is not the worst, as people demanding for a different and more exciting means of communication, internet are no longer for just surfing the website or email. It has become an Instant Messaging machine, this kind of communication empowers the communicators to send and receive messages simultaneously just as they would on the predictable discussion. Yet, this mean of instantaneous intermingle compelled the participators to brief or condense the words into a shorter form such as FYI (for your information), BRB (Be right back) and LOL (Laugh out Loud) just to name a few. The disadvantages brought about with communication technology are obscure but existent nonetheless. Communication is not only the words on a screen but the meaning and intent behind those words. The first problem occurs when communication breaks down and individuals don't have a clear understanding of the message sent. Clearly being in person to correct any misunderstanding would be better communication. The ease of the situation will sometimes cause errors in complacency. The reports, messages, and emails that can be sent with one click are often times the result of the wrong click going to the wrong place (see Reinard, 2007) Technology is the artificial enhancement of human power. It should make us stronger and smarter; however our demented community is discovering that it now has the opposite effect. Nuclear power has terrified and paralyzed its creators, while the improved cleverness and flexibility of our machines have caused social chaos and economic stagnation (see Atkinson, 2010) Technology is bound to rule our present and our future. This is an escapable fact that we need to face. It has ruled over different facets of our life and influenced the way we live. Computers and the Internet technology in particular have undoubtedly revolutionized the field of education. It plays an important yet fragile role in this field. It undeniably made a profound impact on educational institutions so much so that it made them rethink and redesigned school curriculums to conform to this “fad”. Their goal seems to have shifted its focus. It has now considered technology as part and parcel of the educational system. The benefit of tapping into this continuing trend is immense (see technoprimer, 2010)     Advances in technology have dramatic effects in the way classes are conducted, the classroom became more dynamic, information became more accessible through more diverse types of media, the amount of information one could find is also seemingly immense. The time in retrieving this information has also became insignificant, what will take you hours or even days to find decades ago could now be found in a click of a button (see technoprimer, 2010) Computers are becoming more and more compact, more mobile. ICs are getting tinier and tinier allowing storage devices to store more and more information. A thin line now set computers apart from mobile phones. I consider the past few years as a revolution...a ”Mobile Revolution”. People recognizes the potential of mobile phones as a new medium in spreading information, digital information has become more accessible, more cheaper. A substantial number of users have switch from using computers to mobile phones in terms of sharing information, since nowadays, the former functions almost the same as the latter. Virtual mobile classroom isn’t that far. What lie ahead of us is a future of uncertainty, yet full of hope. I see a future with no boundaries (see technoprimer, 2010) However in reality the significance of team contribution will enhance diverse in the technology era because technology will make more experts out of the workforce and any successful completion can come to pass only if a group of experts work jointly successfully. Therefore organizations will do well to be familiar with the prototype in team customs that are up-and-coming due to the incline of technology. They have to develop intercession that will aggressively work towards linking the fundamental gap and keeping the organically discrete teams expressively and encouragement unified. It's a small world. Now it is becoming smaller, especially the professional side of it. Technology is engineering a new small world in a small web where zillions of people collaborate across time, space, and organizational boundaries. There is a whole new workforce lingo. There are geographically dispersed teams and virtual teams and parallel teams and networked teams and telecommuters and what not. All this is surely causing a paradigm shift in our good old ways of thinking about the workplace (see Doodles, 2009) Granted, all this new technology has succeeded in ensuring quantum leaps in productivity and profitability for many organizations. That is why they are on an upturn. It is good for the economy (see Doodles, 2009) But perhaps it is time to get a handle on the other issues that have been overlooked in the bonanza that the technological mediations have presented. Most importantly, the effects on team processes such as team cohesiveness, trust, communication and interpersonal relationship building. It is important to understand the kind of work culture that is evolving, so that organizations can address the new workplace paradigm while continuing to savor the benefits of the technological era (see Doodles, 2009)
