Immigration-Is It An Issue'
“Freedom and social tolerance, I can't speak for anyone else but that's why I came” she answered. “It's easy to find a place in the world ready to strip you of your rights and make you feel as if you are some sort of inferior mutant when you look to the government, America really is the land of opportunity”. Words of an immigrant to this nation we so casually call home. Her name was Heiwan, or “Eve”, and she came to the states to a pursue a college career and start a new life. Millions of immigrants come to this nation in hopes of having a life worth living, one of which will be of abundances and not inadequacies. Many come legally such as Heiwan, and others enter this countries as illegals, starting the first step of their destiny on the wrong foot. The problem does not lie in the fact that immigrants want to come to America, just the route they take to get here, legally speaking. By having illegal immigrants in this nation, natural-born citizens and naturalized citizens are left to pay the difference in taxes for everyone, stretching their hard earned money to cover the difference in taxes illegals don't pay. As a result school funding and general state funding suffer, and one state had had enough. Arizona passed a law that's goal was to end this illegal invasion by being proactive rather than reactive. It is called SB 1070, long story short it legalizes racial profiling in Arizona in hopes of
stopping what some call this infestation.
This new law, recently passed in Arizona was “intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States”
Through this legislation, officers of the law have been granted authority to verify the citizenship of people who see who is a legal citizen and who isn't, upon discretion. As one can see, an act like this can only be assumed as racial profiling which is defined as any police or private security practice in which a person is treated as a suspect because of his or her race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. To those who oppose this law it is seen as a law that takes us back ages in our history, reliving our darker shames of our racist historical past. Rather than move forward, it pulls back our historical progress to days where we based descions on whether someone was a good or bad person based on their complexion- how are we expected to move forward if we keep repeating the mistakes of our past'
Just as there are two sides to a coin, there is a side that supports the pass of SB 1070. Native born citizens and naturalized feel as though this law adds too much leniency to was is nationally recognized as a crime. These Americans are being cut short of their benefits for the taxes they pay. Due to being invisible to the government through lack of paper work, illegals are being “treated” to the perks of citizens who have to pay high taxes to balance out the cost of being American.
as one can imagine the mexican american and mexican populations in and around the world were outraged. the mexican president publically detested this law, claiming it violated human rights. many people argued that this sort of act being legalized is a violation of human rights, they believe this act has done nothing but stain and tanish the reputation of the majority of people who are only looking for opportunities to gain comfort and establishment for their families. sooon after this bill was passed, Arizona saw the error in their ways-financially speaking. their economy was shattered with the sudden loss of their heavy labor and field worker. as a result, Arizona attempted to get those same people they worked so hard to push out and strip of rights to some how come back to only work for these corporations and then return to mexico when their work was completed. Some view this as exploiting people by dangling their dream of living in America above their heads by making them work for a company they can never have access to in the stores they sell them in. so in hopes of achieving some sort of financial redemption, they created a guest like pass into the US for those who don’t have citizenship. This pass would only permit the immigrants to come to the US only to work and upon completion of their work, they were to go home. Arizona made it clear that in no way would this lead to citizenship, and in no way was any sort of social or recreational activity permited in the country. So in retrospect, Arizona is learning that the this bill has caused more harm than damage to their state and now have to pay the piper because of their decisions.
The US was established as a place of equal opportunity and safe haven for those who were in hopes of fleeing their country’s oppression. Unfortunately many of these optimists have been let down by the American drive of greed over generosity and have been left with a bad taste in their mouths as for how sweet the American dream is. “When I came, I did everything by myself. When you come to a new country, you learn to stand on your feet and see who is for you and against you”. as a nation we should welcome those who aspire to have the life we feel we are entitled to, after we are all sharing a planet, why not countries'
