There are many good things that Industrialization had. Inventions and technology made the United States stand out to the other countries around the world. The inventions that were invented during this time were: the light bulb, telephone, refrigerated railroad car, refrigeration, and the electric generator. Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb and Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Other good thing that made that made Industrialization good for the United States was the economic world power. This helped the United States to become very wealthy. Since this made the United States wealthy, the United States was able to build a strong military to protect our country. The military came to play during War World 1 and 2, which the United States won. Even though there were good things in industrialization, there were some bad things. Industrialization caused the military to wipe out Native American Culture. They did this because they needed the Indians land to build railroads and for natural resources. It also promoted Greed and Robber Barons. Then Immigration and Urbanization started during the 1880’s to 1910. Immigration was about the United States building thousands of factories to make goods. So this caused the United States to need million of workers. Therefore our government opened it borders to immigrants and many immigrants came from Europe and Asia to work in factories. When the immigrants came from Europe, they went to Ellis Island and the immigrants that came from Asia, went to Angel Island. Ellis Island and Angel Island was a processing center to see if the immigrants were healthy and disease free. If the immigrants were not healthy, they were sent back to their hometown. The immigrants came to the United States for better jobs and a better life. Immigrants were treated very disrespectful. The United States made them work 16 to 18 hours a day. Also they were paid very little. If a worker got sick, they had to send their child to work for them until they got well. The immigrants lived in overcrowding and not enough living space, which caused diseases to spread. There were also too much traffic around the area, polluted water, and polluted air. There were not enough electricity, gas, and water for people to use. There was also garbage everywhere in the cities which attracted rats, raccoons, and other animals. Then neighborhoods broke into ethic or race sections. Urbanization was about millions of immigrants, farmers, and people who live in rural areas that flocked to American Cities looking to work in our factories. This caused a problem because the population grew to an alarming rate and caused problems that our government had to fix. To solve this problem they created Sky Scrappers, to make room. They also created trolley cars and subways to reduce traffic and to transport people to their jobs. Immigration and Urbanization made a big impact to our society. Next the Gilded Age started in the 1890’s. Gilded Age means something that looks good on the outside but is corroded on the inside. The famous author Mark Twain gave us this name. There were many good things about the Gilded Age. Industrialization began making a lot of jobs for people to work in. This caused a lot of immigrants to come to the United States. The United States was a democracy, which allowed people to have freedom of rights and a good life. Even though there were some good things about the Gilded Age, there were a lot of bad things. Immigrants had to work for very long hours for little pay in unsafe working conditions. The children as young as 6,7,8 years old had to work in unsafe working conditions, which caused many children to get hurt or die. There were racism in the south and the natavists mistreated people. The natavist were mistreating people too. The political decided to take money from big businesses and factory owners to look the other way, while immigrants were being exploited for money too. Then one day people and groups decided to make a change. Settlement houses started, which is when the rich and middle class lived in poor environments to help the poor out. Americanization started which helped the Immigrants children to learn about the American Culture. The YMCA also formed which was an organization to help the youth out. Social Gospel was a movement that strove to improve conditions in cities, Booker T. Washington founded a college name Tuskegee. Then in the 1890’s African Americans lost their voting rights even though the 15th amendment was passed. It all started out with the fifteenth amendment, which prohibited states from denying citizens the right to vote regardless of color, race, or previous condition of servitude. However, it did not bar the governments from requiring that citizens be literate or own property in order to vote. Using this loophole, Southern states started to make laws which barred nearly all African Americans from voting. The first Southern State that took the first step in creating a law was Mississippi. In 1890 they made a law that required all citizens registering to vote will have to pay a poll tax of two dollars. Back then two dollars was a lot of money and a sum beyond the means of most poor African Americans. Mississippi also instituted a literacy test. The literacy test required that prospective voters can be able to read or understand the State Constitution. This also hurt many African Americans because they were illiterate. Mississippi had an effect on other Southern States, which they adopted Similar restrictions. Some states gave whites a special break with a so-called grandfather clause, which allowed any man to vote if he had an ancestor who appeared on voting rolls. The Ku Klux Klan would kill any African American that tried to vote. With the help of African Americans, blacks are now allowed to vote and segregation has ended. These things made a big impact on our society.
