Immigration is very beneficial to Canada. Immigration is beneficial to Canada because it helps sustain the economy and brings more stability to Canada. Canada's liberal immigration system serves the demographic, economic and social interests of the country and is the foundation of Canada's identity, strength and global competitiveness. However, Canada should keep its open-door policy for immigrants, sponsored family members and refugees at the target level of 250,000 newcomers each year. There is a story on a man named Fawad. He was a refugee Afghanistan and they were forced to flee because of all the danger. Fawad and his family escaped to Pakistan and lived there as a refugee for ten years. After that Fawad’s dad said that they needed to get an education so that they can succeed and get to a better country for a better life. Fawad’s learned English, and that enabled him to enter a Canadian university program. Fawad said“ since Canada accepted me, it is time to give back.” And today Fawad is a policy analyst. This shows that even a refugee can contribute to the Canadian economy if we give them the opportunity to shine. They include the promotion of Canada's demographic, economic, social and cultural goals; family reunion; nondiscrimination; the fulfillment of Canada's international obligations in relation to REFUGEES; and co-operation among all levels of government, as well as with the voluntary sector, in promoting the adaptation of newcomers to Canadian society. – (Canadian Encyclopedia) Immigration is good for the demographic, economic, and for the social interests of Canada. Canada’s demographic stability has been primary goals and successes of Canada’s immigration policy. Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier launched the first intense immigrant recruitment policy in 1896 lead to a large-scale emigration of Canadians to the United States. This replacement stratagem was hugely successful between; 1896 to 1913, Canada’s population grew at a rate unparalleled by any other nation. In the mid 1980s, fertility levels in Canada decreased to a level that threatened the existing population and required government to step in and take action. Therefore without a shift in immigration policy, low fertility rates can lead to a big devastation in population decline. Canada’s aging population, threatens the stability of the countries labour force and social services tax base. So the government acted upon this and made annual target of immigrant intake would rise to 250,000 by 1992. Immigrants slight impact on lowering the country’s average age, a rush of working age immigrants will help set off the social benefit costs and labour shortages associated with mass retirement. Immigrants basically inject life into a shrinking Canadian workforce. Between 1986-1996, immigrants to Canada accounted for half of the country’s population growth, a proportion that increased to 70 percent by 2006. Statistics Canada predicts that by the year 2025, immigration will become the sole source of population growth in Canada. Canadian-born working age population to retirees is projected to continue through to 2011, by which time statistics Canada predicts that immigration will account for 100 percent of the net growth of Canada’s labour force. In addition to helping out with Canada’s demographic problems, immigration policy has been consistently oriented towards the country’s economic interests. Whenever short-term economic forecasts are affected by the arrival of immigrants, immigration has been restricted to protect wages and jobs of Canadians. Here is a situation of this. In the great depression of the 1930s when jobs were scarce, Canada closed its doors to immigrants and refugees. Following the Second World War, when Canadians experienced critical labour shortages, the government once again turned immigration to fuel its economy. In turn, when economic productivity began to deteriorate in 1957, in 1974, and again in 1995, immigration intake was lowered until things started to balance out. This is wrong and should be changed, and the government shouldn’t just be shunning out immigrants just to protect the Canadians jobs. The economic orientation of Canada’s immigration policy based, on the demonstrated productivity of successive waves of immigrants. Immigrants are basically like the vertebrae of Canada’s economy, in other words they are the people keeping Canada’s economy stand upright and keeping it stable and structured. Immigrants often perform menial jobs that fuel economic growth in the small business sector. Although recent immigrants are more likely to receive welfare cheques than the Canadian-born population, on average immigrants shows less overall reliance on social welfare payments than the Canadian-born population. And immigrant households have been found to make a greater net lifetime contribution to Canada’s social services than the comparable Canadian-born household. Thus, meaning that immigrants are very hard working people that in fact upkeep Canada’s economy more than people who were even born in native-born to Canada. Immigrants that come to Canada are very well educated. Of those immigrated to Canada between 1996-2001, 40 percent possessed a university degree, higher proportion than any previous group of immigrants. Within a few years of their arrival, skilled workers have historically exceeded the average income of employed Canadians. Family-sponsored immigrants and refugees, who accounted for 25 percent and 11 percent of all newcomers in 2001, respectively, are also often highly skilled people who typically meet or exceed the average income of Canadians within a decade or two of their arrival. Skilled immigrants selected through the points system constituted 62 percent of all newcomers in 2001. The diversity of Canada's population and its multicultural tradition are a source of pride for Canadians, who broadly support a liberal immigration system. The success of Canada's immigration system has also received international respect and admiration. In 2006, the US sought advice from Canada regarding its points-based immigration policy. Canada's acceptance of large numbers of refugees and the relative integration of its immigrants into society has been praised internationally. But Canada is also beginning to lose its international respect and its reputation. Canada needs to keep its immigrant-policy to keep allowing immigrants/family-class/refugees but, not at the risk of allowing dangerous immigrants. This is a reputation worth keeping intact. In conclusion large-scale immigration has consistently provided an important contribution to the tempering of these demographic and economic trends. Prime Minister Stephen Harper's renewed commitment in late 2006 to accepting 1 percent of the population in newcomers annually is therefore to be welcomed, as is the financial commitment his government has made to the socio-economic integration of recent immigrants. This shows that how vital immigrants are to Canada. Immigrants are the very foundation of Canada, without immigrants Canada would be lower on most aspects of life.
