Trent Hawkes Davis A1 17 December 2009 Illegal Immigration Should Illegal Immigrants be allowed to stay in the United States' The United States Constitution requires the federal government to maintain American borders from invasion. Yet, illegal population continues to rise each year. In 1972, illegal immigrant population had reached one million. Officials now estimate ten to twenty million illegal immigrants in this nation. Law enforcement admits that they have no idea of how many people are sneaking into the country undetected. All the time people hear on the news about illegal aliens and debate over how America should or shouldn’t control the problem. The fact is that people can’t always believe every thing the politicians and activist are saying. Some activists will debate on illegal immigration being, well, illegal. The problem is it’s illegal. Americans are begging Congress, mayors, governors, anyone who will listen, to simply enforce a law to help them out of this mess. Illegal immigrants should be detained and deported for entering the United States illegally, because it puts American’s safety at risk, steals jobs from Americans, and illegal immigration destroys the economy. (Newman) Illegal immigration puts Americans safety at risk. Nobody should really believe that all illegal aliens are terrorists. The problem is that those who come to America to work and those who come to America to kill are using the same way in. One of the most obvious reason is the two thousand mile border between Mexico and the United States. The United States border fence runs through California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The border is six hundred and seventy miles long and is leaving one thousand three hundred and thirty miles wide open. Almost seventy percent of illegal aliens are Mexican. Again, Law enforcement has no idea exactly how many people are slipping into the country, but they know how many get caught. In March 2006, FBI Director Robert Mueller told the House Appropriations Subcommittee, “There are individuals from countries with known al Qaeda connections who are changing their Islamic surnames to Hispanic-sounding names and obtaining false identities, learning to speak Spanish and pretending to be Hispanic immigrants.” Maybe they are all going to move to Mexico and live happily ever after, or maybe they are going to come to America to blow up buildings. About seventeen percent of all those in federal prison are illegal aliens and prisons only represent three percent of the population. There is just too many possibilities of illegal aliens being dangerous to Americans. America needs to be more alert on the U.S. border with Mexico, because still Illegal aliens are flooding across the border. Illegal aliens who commit crimes in America should be deported. (Huffington) While the crisis down south will get all the headlines, the open Canadian border is just as dangerous. It’s twice the size of the Mexican border and America only has one fifth of the border patrol agents stationed up there. Up until late 2007, Canadian border agents had no access to firearms and had to call their police to handle dangerous individuals. Canada expects to train and arm all of their guards by 2016, but as of now, some only have pepper spray, and the ability to yell “Eh!” very loudly. (Zaitchik) Illegal aliens steal jobs from Americans. America is a charitable country, but people need to realize that they can’t help everyone. Illegal immigrants are breaking laws. It is easy to look at a poor family of illegal immigrants and feel your heart break, but should a poor family of illegals be in charge over Americans who have paid their taxes for decades' Americans are now facing on loosing their jobs, homelessness, and massive health care bills. Employers have illegal aliens work for under minimum wage and Americans can’t get paid more than the immigrants. Why should Employers pay minimum wage to Americans, when employers could have an illegal do the same job for three bucks an hour' Employers may think that they are “compassionate” in helping the illegal aliens or maybe it’s because it saves them money. An example that shows how illegal immigration affects employment is found in Arizona. Arizona has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. Illegal Immigration distorts the law of supply and demand. If Employers supply the market with illegal aliens, who are the only ones that are willing to work for three dollars an hour, then the demand for higher wages goes down. It is fine when legal immigrants earn money, because they exchange money to help the economy grow, and they are required to pay taxes like all Americans. If illegal immigrants earn money, then they pay no taxes on anything and destroy the economy. In some cases illegal aliens send American money to Mexico, which is stealing, and that also destroys the economy. It’s stealing because the money is no longer being exchanged in the United States. Illegal aliens are breaking laws and are stealing jobs from Americans. (Newman) Don’t be fooled by those who say illegal immigrants contribute billions to the economy and take little from it. Illegal immigrants destroy the economy. Many illegal aliens work for low wages, pay no taxes, send millions of dollars to their home country, and use social services at a higher rate than Americans. Michael Huffington, a member of US House of Representatives from California, stated, “Many illegal Immigrants come for two purposes that are both destructive and expensive. They come to commit crimes or to receive Government benefits” (Huffington 63). Many Illegal immigrants do commit a lot of crimes in this country. Illegal aliens are about seventeen percent of all those who are in federal prison. Illegal aliens who are in prison should be deported back into their country, because Americans are paying them to stay in prison through their taxes. If Americans pay more taxes, then the economy goes down and the government becomes more in charge over its citizens. Illegal aliens need the government to survive because they can’t afford to take care of their families or themselves. Illegal immigrants help give the government power when they get social services from the government, because this causes Americans to pay more taxes. If illegal immigrants continue to use the government then it makes the government big and the economy low. Illegal immigration is not a problem for the government it’s a problem for American citizens. American citizens are paying the government and the government is helping millions of illegal aliens to stay in America through welfare. Millions of illegal aliens are using welfare, which gives illegal aliens free education, Medicaid, and food stamps. The education that illegal aliens get isn’t actually free; they just don’t pay for it. Since illegal immigrants are not American citizens, they’re not going to pay taxes. Illegal aliens are fifty percent more likely to use welfare and social services than Americans. Now Americans have less of a chance to social services and Americans pay back the government through their taxes. Welfare benefits must be denied to illegal immigrants. (Carmarota) Many illegal aliens have children born in the United States and don’t have any health insurance. Under the fourteenth amendment of the constitution, every child of an illegal immigrant that is born in this country is automatically an American citizen. They’re many illegal aliens who have legal children and can’t be deported because of this law. People are begging the Senate, of the legislative branch, to amend this law. Illegal immigrants who have children born in this country shouldn’t be given American citizenship. Now technically the illegal alien just became an American citizen that doesn’t pay their taxes and mooches of the government. Hmmm… doesn’t sound to good because that’s the truth and the government doesn’t want people to find out that it’s one of their tricks for making higher taxes. All American citizens pay their taxes except illegal immigrants and the government doesn’t do anything about this problem. Illegal aliens born in this country should not be given automatic citizenship, because they destroy the economy and the government doesn’t care. (Erler) Illegal immigrants should be detained and deported for entering the United States illegally, because it puts Americans safety in risk, steals jobs from Americans, and illegal immigration destroys the economy. There are some people who might disagree with this statement and again people can’t always believe what the government says. Politicians and activists might say something like, “They’re not illegal immigrants or illegal aliens they’re migrant workers or economic refugees”. Stop falling for the mind tricks and admit that they are illegal aliens and they are destroying the nation. If the nation would start taking action, by making the Mexican boarder stronger and some how provide lots of jobs in Mexico, then maybe America can stop this crisis. If that doesn’t work, then maybe Americans can all move to Mexico. Since everything in America is all going downhill anyway, then why not' Works Cited Camarota, Steven A. “Health Care for Immigrants Would Add Billions to Medical Tab.” McClatchy – Tribune News Service 24 Sep 2009: n.p.
