Identifying Your Values And
How Your Values Align With
The Values of Kudler Fine Foods
By
Janelle Margery H. Azurin
University of Phoenix
Values as defined by Heathfield (2010), “are traits or qualities that are considered worthwhile; they represent your highest priorities and deeply held driving forces.” Values are everything that has happened in an individual’s life that includes influences from family, friends, peers, work experience, education, reading, religious affiliation and more.
As an individual, we have different set of values based on what we have learned or experienced in our lives. One person may have the same experience as the other individual but the way they perceive or handle a certain situation; values affect their decision making. An example of this would be, an employee who asks for and emergency leave because his/her relative is dying. A manager who values his/her commitment to the company rather than his concern for his/her family would definitely decline the request of his/her employee because they have different set of values.
There are many listed values; examples of there are credibility, honesty, innovativeness, teamwork, excellence, accountability, empowerment, quality, efficiency, dignity, collaboration, stewardship, empathy, accomplishment, courage, wisdom, independence, security, and challenge. One must choose their own set of values based on what they believe in and that will define their character. Then live and apply them visibly at home or at work. According to Heathfield (2010), “living your values is one of the most powerful tools available to you to help you be the person you want to be, to help you accomplish your goals and dreams, and to help you lead and influence others.”
I value many things in life, family, friends, work, trust, commitment, honesty, efficiency, respect, loyalty, acceptance, and love. If I were a manager at Kudler Fine Foods, this set of values will help me deal with customers and employees at the same time. Being committed and efficient will influence me in a positive way because it will drive me to do my best in every aspect of my job as the manager of Kudler Fine Foods. I will serve as a role model to my employees, by being punctual and always in time for work, completing every task assigned, being a good team player and living up to the vision of the Kudler Fine Foods.
Loving and accepting what I do as a manager at Kudler Fine Foods will motivate me to work harder for the benefit of the company. If I love what I am doing at Kudler Fine Foods, I will do whatever it takes to make the company profitable and stable. I will always think what’s best for the company and always do everything that will benefit Kudler Fine Foods.
Every company in the corporate world will experience challenges in their business, Kudler Fine Foods considers the closing of Del Mar Store in the future, and this will affect the employees who works on that particular store. Being loyal to the company, even in times like this, I will help the company with its transition in any way I can. I will continue to motivate my employees through acknowledgement of their hard work either by giving them rewards or recognition. I will let them know that they are part of the team and I value and respect their opinions, decisions, and contributions at work.
I also value family, friends and work. Since I was a child I grew up in an environment where we have close family ties. I always see my parents, their siblings and my cousins on a regular basis. We always have reunions and parties just to make sure that our families see each other once in awhile because most of my uncles and aunties are already based in the United States. I will consider Kudler Fine Foods my second family, making sure that everything is working and functioning well. Trusting one another inside the company is also an important value. I always trust my family members and friends in doing the right thing, we should also learn how to trust our colleagues that they will do their best for the benefit of the company. People empowerment is having the person in charge of what he/she is doing. This will give the employee the motivation to do their jobs accordingly and will make them feel that their decisions are also important to the company.
I will treat employees equally and always be available to them whenever they need me. Knowing what they want and need will make them feel that they are important to the company. I personally would want a manager whom I can talk to about anything inside the company. When there are issues regarding work, colleagues or family, it will make it easier for the employee to tell the manager if he/she knows that the manager is approachable and willing to listen. On an article written by Weissenberger (2009), “workplace gossip is unproductive. It breeds resentment and becomes a roadblock to effective communication and collaboration.” When this happens in the workplace, employees will have low morale than can lead to low self-esteem. This later on will affect their performance that can lead to absences, tardiness and worst of all turnovers.
Most of all I value honesty, it is important for me to be honest. I don’t want telling lies to anyone. As a manager at Kudler Fine Foods it is my responsibility to be honest with my employees. Letting them know first hand what is happening inside the company. It does not matter whether it is a positive thing or not, but what is important is that these employees will be informed. It is much difficult if we keep our employees blind with all the issues going on inside the company. An example of this would be the upcoming closure of Del Mar Store. It is important for the employees of this particular store to know that this branch is closing. We have to inform them that even if the store is closing, our management will do our best to help them either by giving them early retirement or transferring them to the other store that will open in Carlsbad. Being honest with your employees will make them feel that they are valued and you do not take them for granted.
