Unit 1 Theory Task 3 Explain how you could promote inclusion, equality and diversity with your current/future learners. Identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners. Diversity values the differences in people, whether that relates to gender, race, age, disability or any other individual characteristics they may have. It recognises that we are not the same but we need to value everyone’s input and their needs. Initial assessment identifies those needs, we then signpost or refer to the appropriate body. We should also consider whether our marketing, teaching materials or teaching provision/facilities is such that it appears to exclude/disregard any section of society by gender religion etc, particularly if we identify that there are imbalances in our client group. Creating awareness of the provision of social & learning needs, evaluation of each session to ensure everyone felt they contributed, and use of Feedback from learners are all ways to promote inclusion. The teacher must make provision to provide learners with the opportunity of achieving. If someone feels excluded or singled out it can affect their “Esteem Needs” which has a detrimental affect on the learning potential. All Students should feel included regardless of any perceived differences. Feeling excluded can manifest itself in many different forms. The inability of a student to attend the course can result in the student not feeling included and falling behind with studies. This could be due to social needs, illness or economic reasons. By ensuring initial assessments are robust, social & learning needs are identified. We can the signpost or refer learners. This can be to the local authority to enquire about free public transport to get to and from the seat of learning or Grants for child care. Assistance with English should English not be the learners first language. Student Loan companies can help out economically if course fees are out of reach to the learner at the outset of the course. Equal Opportunities signposting to professional bodies or learning establishment advisors is another referral teachers can make. Student unions for advice on learning activities or mentoring within the set of learning is another option. For all these referrals, the teacher must be aware of the needs of the learners but it is vital the Teacher retains a professional distance and does not become emotionally involved.
